May 23, 2009 Yankees 4, Phillies 3

Another tight game, but unfortunately the Phillies again end up on th short end of the stick for the third straight game. Jayson Werth smokes one out of the park for his 12th homer in the 1st inning for a good start and the Yankees only score in one inning in J. A. Happ's first start of the year, but it is enough. An A-Rod 3-run homerun and a Johnny Damon RBI double in the Yankee 3rd inning is all they need. The Phils do peck back with two runs in the 7th to narrow the gap, and like last game Mariano Rivera enters the 9th inning trying for the save with the lead. Carlos Ruiz leads off the 9th with a triple, and I guess the Yankees manager remembered yesterday's trouble with Rivera and he is immediately yanked in favor of Jose Veras. Ruiz is stranded at third as Veras retires all three batters to face him, striking out two, and records his first save of the year. Andy Pettitte goes to 6-0 for the Yanks as he and Chad Billingsly of the Dodgers at 7-0 have the best starts so far.

Today also featured the debut of the Phillies' John Mayberry Jr., who singled in his first major league atbat. You might recall his father, John Mayberry, who was a first baseman primarilly for the Royals and Blue Jays in the 1970s, making the all-star team twice in a fairly decent 15 year career.
