| Both the Red Sox and Phillies play New York teams for this series, just not the ones you would expect. With this series being the first interleague series of the year, that brings the Mets to Fenway and puts the Phillies against the Yankees in The Bronx. As for today's Sox game, all Boston. The Mets did score first, but the Sox get 14 runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to put the game away with a David Ortiz grand slam knocking former Cy Young winner Johan Santana from the game in the 3rd. Bobby Parnell provides no relief for the Mets as the Red Sox tack on 9 more runs off of him as he unmercifully stays in for an 80 pitch relief shellacking as Jason Bay and Dustin Pedroia each add 2-run homers and a solo shot for Jason Varitek off of Parnell. Pedroia, Ortiz and Varitek all score 3 runs each while Papi and Pedroia knock in 4 teammates apiece. Daisuke Matsuzaka just sits back and strikes out 9 Mets in 6 innings for an easy win. Some late Met scoring off of the still struggling Manny Declarmen and Daniel Bard turn the game into a unexpected shootout. Lost in the shuffle is a nice 4 for 5 day for the Mets' Luis Castillo as he scored 3 times and a 3 for 6 day for Mets leadoff hitter Daniel Murphy. All 18 position starters get in on the action with at least a run, hit or RBI except for Jeremy Reed and Ramon Martinez for the Mets and Mike Lowell for the Sox. |

David Ortiz cleared three ducks from a very crowded pond with a grand slam as
the seemingly unstoppable Boston Red Sox defeated the New York (NL) Mets 15
to 8 at Fenway Park.
Ortiz enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He emptied the bases with a Grand
Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and doubled in the 7th inning. Boston lit up
the scoreboard in the 3rd inning with 7 runs on 4 hits and the 4th inning
which saw them plate 5 runs on 5 hits. Boston rapped out 14 hits for the
night.
Daisuke Matsuzaka(1-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. Johan
Santana(2-4) was the losing pitcher. By giving up 5 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings his ERA increased from 4.53 to 5.14.
