May 21, 2009 Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 0

Today was all Jon Lester. Lester turns in a masterful performance, striking out 11 Jays hitters with 8 innings of shutout ball alolowing 5 hits and walking two for his 6th win of the season. Almost identical to his last start, which was 8 innings of shutout ball with three hits allowed and 10 K with no walks. Lester runs second in the majors in strikeouts with 81 behind Justin Verlander of Detroit who has 92 (in only 66 innings!!). As you would expect, Verlander and Lester run 1-2 in the AL in K-per-9 innings, Verlander at 12.55 and Lester at 10.72.

The win for the Sox, their 7th straight, continues their wild roller coaster ride as of late. On May 4th they sat in first place percentage points ahead of the Blue Jays. On May 13th the Sox sat tied for last place fresh off an 8 game losing streak but only three games behind. Now today, May 21st, they sit one game back of New York with Tampa percentage points behind the Yankees. Meanwhile, the formerly in first Blue Jays has now fallen to last place thanks to a 4-10 slump.

Jon Lester reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the seemingly unstoppable
Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 5 to 0 at
Fenway Park.

Lester(6-2) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits
and 2 walks in 8 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.40 to 2.12. Boston had
10 hits overall, while Toronto had 6.

Robert Ray(1-3) took the loss. He gave up 1 run and 4 hits in 3 and 1/3
innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Lester - except
Toronto. Cito Gaston lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping
our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher -
makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the
visitors!'
