Nationals halfway stats

I just noticed that the Nationals are at the 81 game mark, so for comparison's sake here are the stats. The Nats have had the worst record in the majors the majority of the season, currently sitting 18 1/2 games behind the first place Phillies, but I haven't played the Phillies game for the date yet when I posted this. That 5.16 team ERA is the worst in the majors, only the Nats and Mets are over the 5.00 mark.

So far, the only decent star on offense is Adam Dunn who sits 5th in walks, and his 19 homers and 57 RBI make the league leader lists. But so do his 98 whiffs, 4 ahead of Phillie free swinger Ryan Howard but WAY behind league leader Mark Reynolds of Arizona who has whiffed 114 times. Pitchers John Lannan and Shairon Martis, each at 2-11, run 2nd in losses in the majors behind Randy Wolf (2-13). There are though two players on the Nationals who lead the major leagues in their respective stats: Lannan leads the majors in allowing the most runs, and Ryan Zimerman's 18 GIDP leads all of baseball.

July 6, 2009 A's 5, Red Sox 4

The Sox led the entire game after scoring 3 in the 3rd inning - that is, until the 9th. The A's get two runs off a rather sharp John Smoltz , one more off of Ramon Ramirez, and hut the usually reliable Jonathan Papelbon in the 9th to the tune of 4 hits and 2 runs, with the final hit being Matt Holliday's fourth hit of the game giving the A's the lead. The Sox get two on in the 9th off of Andrew Bailey, but fail to put any runs on the board and suffer the loss.

Two notable things in the game - Aaron Bates gets a single in his first major league at bat, and the return of Nomar to Boston. Today will be the first appearance for Nomah in Fenway Park since the 2004 trade, and the fans treat him to a standing ovation his first time to the plate. Nomah does get a hit and scores a run. Also a nice 3 hit, 2 RBI day for Jason Bay in the losing effort with all starters but Big Papi and Rocco getting at least one hit.

Left fielder Matt Holliday had 4 hits as the Oakland Athletics won in dramatic
fashion over the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Oakland came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs on 4 hits. Scott Hairston opened up the inning nicely when he
lined a single. After an out was recorded, Hairston was running on the next
pitch and he stole second. Mark Ellis then delivered a base-hit. Adam
Kennedy stepped in and he stroked a single. Orlando Cabrera was the next
batter, but he struck out. Holliday kept the rally going and lined a
base-hit. Oakland ended up with 13 hits for the game while Boston had 10.

The victory was credited to Craig Breslow(5-2) who went 2 innings, allowing 1
run. Andrew Bailey recorded his 16th save. The losing pitcher was Jonathan
Papelbon(1-2) in relief.

After the game, it took a long while before Terry Francona emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Oakland locker room.'

July 5, 2009 Phillies 4, Mets 1

Almost another possible marathon, but a play the percentages move for the Mets in the bottom of the 9th backfires on them. A tight 1-1 game, with the Phillies run coming on a Carlos Ruiz solo homerun, finally gets a little action in the home half of the 9th. With one out, Shane Victorino singles. Chase Utley tried the hit and run, misses the pitch but Victorino slides into second safely for the stolen base. Utley the flies out for the second out. Not wanting anything to do with lefty Ryan Howard, right hander Elmer Dessens intentionally walks him to get to righty Jayson Werth. But Werth has some pop in his bat too don't forget, and takes a hanger from Dessens over the fence for a walk-off three-run homer, his 19th four-bagger of the year, as the fans go wild.

A nice start for Joe Blanton, who tried to give the 'pen a break, going almost 9 but veteran lefty Scott Eyre gets the final out of the Mets 9th getting righty Gary Sheffield to fly out when he pinch-hit for lefty Brian Schneider with a runer on base after I has already called Eyre to the mound.. Eyre ends up being in the right place at the right time and gets his first Phillie win. Just call Blanton the No-Decision Man as in his last 9 starts, despite allowing more than four runs in only one of them, has been saddled with seven no-decisions and two losses.

In an exciting finish the Philadelphia Phillies pulled out a win over the New

Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Shane Victorino got things
rolling when he stroked a base-hit. Victorino got a great jump and stole
second easily. After another out, Ryan Howard came to the plate and was
walked intentionally. Jayson Werth stepped in and he lost the ball over the
fence for three runs resulting in a mighty exciting win for Philadelphia and
the 41,912 home town fans in attendance. The game was a scoreless duel until
the 6th inning.

Scott Eyre(1-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Elmer
Dessens(1-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 3 and 1/3 innings and

July 5, 2009 Mariners 5, Red Sox 0

Jon Lester does not have his mojo on today, as the Mariners send the Sox to the midway point of the season by taking two of three in the series. Lester suffers his worst start of the season, and his first loss in almost two months, allowing all five runs. Ramon Ramirez gets a nice three innings of shutout relief to give the Sox a chance to get back in it, but the combination of Brandon Morrow and David Aardsma hold them off the scoreboard. The Sox do load the bases in the 9th, but come up empty.

WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Franklin Gutierrez robbed David Ortiz of a Homerun!

Brandon Morrow(3-2), with relief help from David Aardsma, mystified Boston
while the Seattle Mariners scored 5 runs in a day game at Fenway
Park.

Seattle wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits. Ichiro Suzuki got things going when he slapped a
base-hit. Russell Branyan next to the plate and he lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run. After an out was recorded, Mike Sweeney stepped
in and he laced a one-base hit. Franklin Gutierrez followed and he grounded
into a double play. That early scoring held up. The pitchers took over
after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

The loss was charged to Jon Lester(10-3). He surrendered 10 hits and 1 walk
in 5 innings.

July 5, 2009 Dodgers 9, Padres 0

Almost had the first no-hitter of the season. Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley continues probably the most surprising season by a player, as compared to real-life numbers, holding the Pads hitless until Eveth Cabrera singles to lead off the 9th. He settle for the one-hitter, and his major league leading 13th win. He didn't have much of a chance at a perfect game thanks to a 2nd inning error, but those would be the only two basrunners for San Diego. Billingsly' ERA drops to an NL leading 1.94, along with a 13-2 record. Not bad for a guy who during the real season went 12-11 with a 4.03 ERA.

Russell Martin went deep and had 3 RBI and Chad Billingsley carried a
no-hitter into the 9th inning at Petco Park where the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers
beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 9 to 0.

Billingsley(13-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the San Diego batters. He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 9
innings. Billingsley whiffed an impressive total of 10 San Diego batters.
The right-handed Billingsley lost his no-hit bid when Everth Cabrera singled
with nobody out in the 9th inning. Los Angeles(NL) totaled 14 hits on the
afternoon.

Josh Banks(2-1) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Los
Angeles(NL) offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Bud Black was impressed with Billingsley and his 10 strikeouts. 'It's tough
to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

July 4, 2009 Mets 8, Phillies 4 (16)

This game is most likely the first time that I have ever gone through my entire bench AND relief corps in the same game, thanks to the 5 hour, 16 inning marathon. Started off slowly, and at the end of the regulation nine innings it was a 2-2 tie. The Mets finally come through in the top of the 13th with two walks, a sac bunt, and a 2-run single for Luis Castillo off of Chan Ho Park for two runs and what looks like a nice 4-2 lead. But, never count the Phillies out. In the bottom of the 13th, Ryan Howard rips a homerun off of Tim Redding and next batter Jayson Werth smokes a shot over the wall off of Francisco Rodriguez for back-to-back homeruns and another tie, this time 4-4.

The game continues to drag on, I pass on a pinch-hit chance and have Tyler Walker bat, and in the bottom of the 15th the Phils get two on base, two out and Walker due up again. The last player on the bench, Eric Bruntlett, comes in to pinch-hit to hopefully send the fans home happy. Bruntlett just hits a weak grounder to short, and is thrown out at first. The last reliever in the pen, Brad Lidge, takes the hill for the top of the 16th and the Mets light him up for four singles, two walks (one intentional), and four runs. No comeback this time for the Phils as three come up and three go down in the bottom of the 16th.

Frankly, I was kind of glad it ended then. If the game had kept going, I might have had to bring in a starter to pitch and I had no one to pinch-hit. I had already brought Park into the game and just put him into the pitcher spot in the order with no double switch even though he was due up in the next inning, since he has a homerun in the season hoping he would get a hit of some kind. He did not, and almost cost the game until the comeback.

Play account follows boxscore.

July 4, 2009 Red Sox 8, Mariners 1

The Sox bring out the fireworks on the 4th and rip out four homeruns, including two for Jeff Bailey, and have no trouble dispatching the Mariners. A 3-run shot for Dustin Pedroia and a solo homer for Rocco Baldelli add to the carnage. Brad Penny gets his second great start in a row and the easy win.

But boy, will the Sox be sad to see Bailey go. He had been absolutely ripping the ball. In only 78 at bats, he has 6 doubles, 4 triples, and 6 homeruns with 22 RBI to add to a .321 batting average and hitting for the cycle in a game. Too bad he will be gone for the season soon.

There is now another number in triple digits for the Sox, and not a good one. Mariners leadoff batter Ichiro Suzuki led off the game and then stole second. That stolen base was the 100th allowed by the Red Sox this season in 80 games, and the 71st off of Varitek. After a lot of curious research, the record for most steals off of a catcher in one season appears to be 155, off of Mike Piazza in 1996. For steal sttempt against one catcher in a season (Varitek has 15 CS to add to the 71 steals for 86 so far), the record appears to be 198 off of Terry Kennedy of the Padres in 1983. Kennedy that year had 135 SB and 63 CS against him. The 226 attempts against the 1983 Padres team as a whole would I guess appear to be the record for one season, or at least the modern record anyway. I still can't find out the most steals against a team in a season though.

With the Sox at 100 steals and 20 caught against them, that will give then 120 so far. With the season about half over, the pace puts the Sox to roughly the 240 mark and 200 stolen bases against them. That would have to be damn close to a record for steals against, and would break the steal attempts record.

Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners by the score of 8 to 1 at Fenway Park.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Bailey. He tripled in the 2nd inning, cracked a solo homerun in
the 5th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning. Boston had 13
hits for the game and Seattle had 4.

The victory was credited to Brad Penny(7-6) who went 7 innings, allowing 1

July 3, 2009 Phillies 18, Mets 5

The Phillies bring out the fireworks a day early as they shellack the Mets, setting a season high with 18 runs scored. Jimmy Rollins sets the tone with a leadoff homerun off of former (and future) National Livan Hernandez, as Livan can't even get out of the first inning. Jayson Werth adds to the carnage with 5 hits, including a triple, two doubles and two singles. All 18 runs were scored in the first six innings. Rodrigo Lopez enjoys all the support in his first major league start post-Tommy John surgery and gets an easy win. Lopez's last major league start prior to surgery was two days shy of exactly two years before this date, when he defeated....the Phillies as a member of the Rockies.

In an oddity, this will not be Livan Hernandez's first start against the Phils this year. He also starts against the Phils twice in September, by then with a Nationals uniform again on his back.

Play account follows box score.
