July 5, 2009 Phillies 4, Mets 1

Almost another possible marathon, but a play the percentages move for the Mets in the bottom of the 9th backfires on them. A tight 1-1 game, with the Phillies run coming on a Carlos Ruiz solo homerun, finally gets a little action in the home half of the 9th. With one out, Shane Victorino singles. Chase Utley tried the hit and run, misses the pitch but Victorino slides into second safely for the stolen base. Utley the flies out for the second out. Not wanting anything to do with lefty Ryan Howard, right hander Elmer Dessens intentionally walks him to get to righty Jayson Werth. But Werth has some pop in his bat too don't forget, and takes a hanger from Dessens over the fence for a walk-off three-run homer, his 19th four-bagger of the year, as the fans go wild.

A nice start for Joe Blanton, who tried to give the 'pen a break, going almost 9 but veteran lefty Scott Eyre gets the final out of the Mets 9th getting righty Gary Sheffield to fly out when he pinch-hit for lefty Brian Schneider with a runer on base after I has already called Eyre to the mound.. Eyre ends up being in the right place at the right time and gets his first Phillie win. Just call Blanton the No-Decision Man as in his last 9 starts, despite allowing more than four runs in only one of them, has been saddled with seven no-decisions and two losses.
