| Jamie Moyer goes 6 innings of shutout ball before allowing the two Reds runs in the 7th, Chad Durbin gets a cheap save by finishing up the game and slugger Ryan Howard has a 4 for 5 day while scoring 3 runs in an easy Phillies win over the Reds. A 14 hit attack leads the Philly offense, as along with Howard's 4 hits Chase Utley chimes in 3 of his own and pitcher Durbin tosses in a single for his second major league hit. But the story of the game is Ryan Howard, who smokes his 20th homer of the year out of the park in the 2nd inning. Howard misses being the fastest player ever to 20 homeruns in a season by one calendar day and three games (I think), this being May 20th and his 38th game. The record by games is Mark McGwire who hit his 20th in his 35th game of the season for the Cardinals back in in 2000, and the record by date is Albert Pujols, who hit his 20th on May 19th of 2006, also for the Cardinals. I say I think Howard missed it because of this. The date is definitely a day short no doubt about that, but the games I don't know. For McGwire, it was his 35th game of the year but for the Cardinals as a team it was their 45th game of the year. This is the Phillies 38th game of the year, and also Howard's 38th since he has not missed a game. So this is basically how it adds up: McGwire 20 HR in 35 games in the 45th game of the year on May 24th Pujols 20 HR in 41 games in the 42nd game of the year on May 19th Howard 20 HR in 38 games in the 38th game of the year on May 20th Individual game-wise, McGwire has it. Date wise, Pujols has it. Team game wise, Howard has it. Draw your own conclusions, but no matter how you look at it this much is for sure: Ryan Howard becomes one of the fastest players ever to 20 homeruns in one season. |
