May 21, 2009 Reds 5, Phillies 4 (10)

Cincinnati avoids the sweep when Clay Condrey allows two walks and a single to lead off the bottom of the 10th and Lance Nix hits a blooper into center as the winning run trots home in a Reds walk-off victory. For Condrey, he allows his first run in almost a month and 17 1/3 innings ago, as his ERA doubles. Normally that would be a bad thing, but his ERA is still at 0.76!!

All four Phillie run came off the bat of Matt Stairs when he jacks one out for a grand slam in the top of the 6th and at the time a 4-2 Phillie lead. The lead is short-lived though as the Reds get a run in the 6th, and some uncharateristc sloppy fielding with an error on Chase Utley with the bases loaded in the 7th brings home the tying run.

Speaking of homeruns, Micah Owings drove one out for the Reds for his 2nd homer of the season. You probably know how much of a slugger Owings is, as to this date here it would be his 7th career homer in only a bit more than two seasons. Nothing though will beat his 2007 rookie year with Arizona when he batted .333 with 7 doubles, a triple, 4 homeruns and 15 RBI including a 4 for 4 game at the plate in what would have to be the best hitting season ever by a pitcher.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Laynce Nix robbed Ryan Howard of an extra base hit.

The Cincinnati Reds put a halt to their 8 game losing streak and nipped the
Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings 5 to 4 at Great American Bpk in a hard
fought contest.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Cincinnati came out on
top in the 10th inning. Adam Rosales drew a walk. Jay Bruce stepped up to
the plate and he drew a walk. Brandon Phillips then delivered a single to
load the bases. Laynce Nix stepped in and he laced a base-hit giving
Cincinnati the victory as 19,249 happy fans celebrated wildly. Cincinnati
had 10 hits for the afternoon while Philadelphia had 7.

The winning pitcher was Jared Burton(5-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Clay Condrey(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and
surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks.

'It felt really nice to get this win,' Burton said. 'I kind of dictated the
game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'
