| There really ain't much else you can say about a game that features a 9th inning comeback for each team, 30 hits, 19 runs, a grand slam, 11 walks and 5 stolen bases than crazy as hell. Started off well when the Sox erased a quick 1-0 Rays lead with a homer for Youk and a bases loaded knock over the wall for the grand slam for Mr. Papi for a 5-1 lead, but once the Rays put theose speedy legs to work that is when all hell broke loose. It begins in the bottom of the 7th inning, Manny Declarmen has just come in relief for Justin Masterson with a 5-2 Red Sox lead. Jason Bartlett gets on with a bunt single and steals second. B. J. Upton singles to score Bartlett, and steals second and third. Wanting to get someone a bit better at holding the runners, Hideki Okajima takes over. Carl Crawford singles to score Upton, and after an out and another single Ramon Ramirez takes over on the mound and is greeted by Willy Aybar who knocks both runners home to give the Rays the 6-5 lead. Aybar was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double ending the inning. In the bottom of the 8th after a walk and a groundout putting the runner to second, Bartlett strikes again with a roller to Ramirez who throws over first for the error enabling the runner to score. Upton singles to score Bartlett, steals second, and I bring in Papelbon to stop the bleeding. Paps picks Upton off of second base and gets the final out of the inning on the next batter. Now 8-5 Rays lead. It takes the Rays 3 pitchers to get through the top of the 9th when no one can nail down the save as the Red Sox get two walks, a wild pitch, a sac fly and 4 consecutive singles as they score 4 times and take the lead back 9-8. Paps stays in the game for the bottom of the 9th, now in linefor a win, and first batter Evan Longoria takes him deep for a homer and the first run scored off of Paps this season in to tie the score back up 9-9 for the second 9th inning comeback of the inning. The Sox get it going in the top of the 10th when Kevin Youkilis is hit by a pitch and scores on JD Drew's triple to re-re-give the Sox their lead 9-8. Not wanting to leave Paps in for another inning, former Dodger closer Takashi Saito takes the 10th and retires the Rays in order for the save. Paps gets credit for the hard-fought Sox win. 15,353 fans watched an exciting game at Tropicana Field. The Boston Red Sox
topped the Tampa Bay Rays by the slimmest of margins, 10 to 9.
The score was tied at 9 after nine. Boston won the hard fought contest in the
10th inning. After two were out Kevin Youkilis was hit by a pitch. J.D.
Drew stepped up next and he tripled. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw
the lead change 5 times.
The victory was credited to Jonathan Papelbon(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Takashi Saito gained credit for his 1st save. Lance
Cormier(0-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 5 hits and no walks.
