| Some very sloppy fielding for the Nationals with three errors along with the overall ineffectiveness of starter John Lannan enable the Phillies to jump out to an 8-0 lead after 2 innings. However, again today the Nats bullpen holds up holding the Phils to one run the remainder of the game as they try to mount the comeback getting 4 runs off of Cole Hamels in the 5th and 2 more off of Scott Eyre in the top of the 9th. With the two run already in and the tying run on base, Brad Lidge gets the final two outs for his 5th save. Lannan drops to 0-4, while Cole Hamels in his worst start of the year gets the win with all of the run support. The 8 runs allowed for Lannan didn't hurt his ERA any since due to the 3 errors all 8 runs were unearned, and his ERA is still 8.85!! I will put the play account from the bottom of the 1st to the bottom of the 2nd in so you can see all the sloppiness for yourself. If all 8 runs were earned, it would balloon Lannan's ERA up to 12.39! Apparently the Nationals bullpen just doesn't like you I guess. In these two games, the Washington starters have allowed 14 runs in 3 innings, while the relievers have only allowed two runs in 15 innings. WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Jesus Flores blocked the plate, saving a run!
Top 3rd: Shane Victorino robbed Nick Johnson of an extra base hit.
In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies registered 5 runs in the 2nd inning
and got by the Washington Nationals by the score of 9 to 7.
Washington fell behind quickly as the Philadelphia offense came through in the
first inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. Jimmy Rollins kicked off the action when
he reached on an error. Shane Victorino came next and he doubled. Chase
Utley then banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Jayson Werth
stepped up to the plate and he doubled. Raul Ibanez stepped into the box and
drew a walk. Pedro Feliz added to the uprising and reached on an error.
Chris Coste struck out, unable to help the rally. Washington threatened in
the 9th but their rally came up short.
Cole Hamels(1-2) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Hamels got help
from Brad Lidge who earned his 5th save. John Lannan(0-4) was given the
loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his
1 and 2/3 innings of work.
'We won because we did the little things right.' Charlie Manual said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'
