| This wasa battle of old vs. new and what should have been vs. what could have been. First, old vs. new. Marlins 24 year old rookie Graham Taylor makes his major league debut against a man old enough to be his father, Phillie old man Jamie Moyer. The Phillie get plenty of chances off of Graham, leaving seven on base just in the first four innings and 14 overall for the game, but Graham pitches shutout ball until tiring in the 7th inning when the Phillieget a couple to tie the game up 2-2. The Marlins retake the lead in the bottom of the 7th on Ronny Paulino's homerun (his second homer of the day), and the Phils strike right back with Pedro Feliz's first homerun of the year in the top of the 8th to retie the game. Then comes what should have been. J. A. Happ comes into the game for the bottom of the 10th inning and after an out Cameron Maybin hits what looks to be a walk-off homerun but due to being a W had to settle for a single. Emilio Bonacio hits a single with Maybin going to third, and steals second. I thought of an intentional walk to Hanley Ramirez to set up a DP, but recalling the disaster of last game decided against it and pitched to him. Happ hits him with a pitch to load the bases anyway. Jorge Cantu comes to the plate and rips what would have been a double, modified to a walkoff single since the winning run only had to go one base so the Maybin non-homer ended up not making a bit of difference in the outcome. To sum it up, the Phils lost last game on a walkoff walk and should have lost today on a walkoff homerun but instead lose on a walkoff double/single three batters later. 6 walks and 12 hits today and only get three runs. At least the 12 hits ups the batting average, as coming into today the Phillies were tied with the Pirates for the worst team batting average in the National League at .235. |
