May 9, 2009 Rays 2, Red Sox 1

A solid start for Jon Lester is wasted as he goes the distance in a complete game loss. Lester did have a bit of uncharacteristic wildness in walking 4 batters, but otherwise whiffed 9 only allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Normally that would be good enough for a win, but Scott Kasmir and Warwick native Dan Wheeler hold the Sox to only one run on four hits. That one run was in the first inning when after a Jacoby Ellsbury triple Dustin Pedroia knocked him home with a groundout, but the Rays get a run to tie the game in the 3rd when a walk to ex-Soxer Gabe Kapler leads to him scoring on a Dioner Navarro double, and a B. J. Upton solo homer in the 6th gives Tampa the winning run.

Two teams going in opposite directions, as for struggling Boston it is their fifth straight loss and seventh loss in their last 8 games, as their recent 2-8 run has dropped them from the division lead down to fourth place and a game below the .500 mark. For the surging Rays, they have now won 8 straight and 10 of their last 11 and are now in a virtual tie with the Yankees for the division lead. The RedSox are 2-7 so far this season against their division rival Rays.
