May 14, 2009 Red Sox 3, Angels 0

Brad Penny, Takashi Saito and Jonathan Papelbon combine on a 4-hit shutout as the Sox break their 8 game slide and avert a series sweep. Plenty of chances with 9 hits and 8 Angel walks and they may have left 12 on base, but the all-important total is in the run collumn. JD Drew's solo shot in the 2nd, and sacrafice flies for Jeff Bailey in the 6th and Dustin Pedroia in the 9th account for the scoring. Had the Sox lost today, they would have dropped to last place alone in the AL East, but the win keeps them in a last-place tie with the Orioles, only 2 1/2 games out of first place.

With the win, Penny goes to 4-1 and ties Jon Lester for the team win lead, and for Paps it is save number 7. Not very many save chances so far for Mr. Automatic.

Brad Penny(4-1) and Ervin Santana(0-1) treated the Los Angeles(AL) fans to a
fine pitching duel at Angels Stadium. The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged
as victors over the Los Angeles(AL) Angels by the score of 3 to 0.

Boston took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner. That
early run support was enough for Penny and Boston. Boston finished with 9
hits while Los Angeles(AL) ended up with 4.

Penny was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 7th save.
