July 23, 2009 Phillies 12, Padres 8

The San Diego Padres have the most anemic offense in the major leagues, but they came to play today in a makeup game from an April rainout. They tee off against Cole Hamels for 6 runs and put 9 on the board overall for the most runs they have scored in a game in almost a month, but the big Phillie hitters answer the call with Rollins, Ibanez and Howard clearing the fence and take Hamels off the hook despite the sloppy preformance and get the win in a slugfest.

Jimmy Rollins slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres by the count of 12 to
8.

Philadelphia had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning when
they had 4 base hits. The key at-bat was by Raul Ibanez who excited the
crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run. Due to a poorly pitched
ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for San Diego
to come away with the victory.

The winning pitcher was Cole Hamels(9-4) who allowed 6 runs in 6 innings. Brad
Lidge was credited with his 18th save. Joe Thatcher(3-1) was charged with
the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning.

This win by Philadelphia continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are a division
leading 56-37. San Diego has a record of 41-55, worst in the division after
the loss.

July 22, 2009 Red Sox 6, Rangers 5

Maybe not the greatest day for Clay Buchholz, but it holds up today mainly due to a three run uprising for the Sox in the 7th via a Papi 2-run double and a sac fly for Mark Kotsay. Interesting day for Kotsay with two runs scored, one hit and one RBI, but oddly enough his hit didn't account for anything! He walked and scored in both the 2nd and the 4th inning, the 7th inning sac fly for the RBI, a groundout to end the 9th and a single in the 6th when he was stranded on the bases.

in 6 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'. Jonathan Papelbon was great in
relief and recorded his 21st save.

The losing pitcher was C.J. Wilson(4-3) in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving
up 3 hits and no walks.

July 22, 2009 Phillies 3, Cubs 2 (10)

Not quite the slugfest of the previous two games, as the Phillies salvage the final game of the series. Jimmy Rollins has a hand in all three Phillie runs as his 2-run homerun in the 5th inning ties the game, and after a triple in the 10th he comes home on a walk-off single for Chase Utley. The difference in the game, and not showing up on the boxscore anywhere, was the Phillie outfield defense. Jayson Werth threw out a runner at home trying to score in the 5th, and Shane Victorino does the same thing when Reed Johnson tries to give the Cubs a lead in the 8th inning by nailing him at home.

July 21, 2009 Cubs 9, Phillies 8

The Phillies lose to the Cubs for the second straight day when a managerial move by me bites me in the ass and the normally reliable bullpen blows up again. In the top of the 7th with a 4-all tie, the Cubs get the first two runners on against Ryan Madson when Ryan Theriot bunts the runners over a base on a sacrifice. With Derrek Lee up (who had hit a homerun earlier in the game) and first base now open, I go for the intentional pass and take my chances with Aramis Ramirez. Bad move, as Ramirez takes one downtown for a grand slam! The Phils to mount the comeback in the bottom of the 8th when Carlos Manuel walks the bases loaded, gives way to Aaron Heilman, and Heilman does no better in walking Pedro Feliz to let a run trot home. Carlos Ruiz grounds into a double play but a run does score, and a Matt Stairs RBI single gives three runs total back. A Cubs run in the 9th proves costly, as the Phils load the bases in the 9th with two more walks and a single, get a run home on another Feliz bases loaded walk, but can't quite knock in the tying runner and take it on the chin again. Seven walks in the final two innings for the Cubs pitchers. All of the excitement happened in the final three innings, seen here. I noticed when fixing a few mistakes that it didn't blog loike it normally does for the play account, but you can still read it hopefully. Next time i will just put the entire play account it so it looks normal. *** TOP OF INNING 7 *** SUBSTITUTE P - Ryan Madson SUBSTITUTE PH- Micah Hoffpauir 0 M.Hoffpauir 6- 4 5 Single b-1 0 1 R.Johnson 4-12 8 5 Single 1-2 b-1 0 12 R.Theriot 5 Sac Bunt 2-3 1-2 b-0 1 23 D.Lee 0 Int Walk b-1 1 123 A.Ramirez 1- 4 4 Home Run 3-H 2-H 1-H b-H SUBSTITUTE P - Clay Condrey 1 K.Fukudome 1- 8 1 Fly Out b-0 2 A.Soriano 2- 8 6 Pop Out b-0 *** BOTTOM OF INNING 7 *** SUBSTITUTE P - Carlos Marmol 0 J.Rollins 3- 6 5 Line Out b-0 1 S.Victorino 5- 5 4 Strike Out b-0 2 C.Utley 3- 7 1 Ground Out b-0 *** TOP OF INNING 8 *** 0 M.Fontenot 2-11 12 1 Line Out b-0 1 K.Hill 4- 8 4 Strike Out b-0 2 C.Marmol 5- 9 3 Strike Out b-0 *** BOTTOM OF INNING 8 *** 0 R.Howard 4- 7 4 Walk b-1 0 1 R.Ibanez 5- 8 4 Walk 1-2 b-1 0 12 J.Werth 5- 7 6 Walk 2-3 1-2 b-1 SUBSTITUTE P - Aaron Heilman 0 123 P.Feliz 6- 6 5 Walk 3-H 2-3 1-2 b-1 0 123 C.Ruiz 2- 8 3 Ground Out Double Play 3-H 2-3 1-o b-0 SUBSTITUTE PH- Matt Stairs SUBSTITUTE P - Sean Marshall 2 3 M.Stairs 4- 8 16 1 Single 3-H b-1 2 1 J.Rollins 5- 5 3 Strike Out b-0 *** TOP OF INNING 9 *** SUBSTITUTE P - Brad Lidge 0 R.Johnson 6- 7 1 4 Single b-1 0 1 R.Theriot 3 Sac Bunt 1-2 b-0 1 2 D.Lee 0 Int Walk b-1 1 12 A.Ramirez 6- 7 18 5 Line Out b-0 2 12 K.Fukudome 5- 9 11 2 Double 2-H 1-o b-2 *** BOTTOM OF INNING 9 *** 0 S.Victorino 2- 8 1 Ground Out b-0 1 C.Utley 1- 8 6 Walk b-1 SUBSTITUTE P - Kevin Gregg 1 1 R.Howard 2- 5 6 Single 1-2 b-1 1 12 R.Ibanez 6- 6 5 Walk 2-3 1-2 b-1 1 123 J.Werth 1-10 3 Strike Out b-0 2 123 P.Feliz 1-12 5 Walk 3-H 2-3 1-2 b-1 SUBSTITUTE P - Angel Guzman 2 123 C.Ruiz 3- 8 3 Ground Out b-0

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez cleared the bases with his grand slam as the
Chicago (NL) Cubs topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 9 to 8 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

Ramirez led the offense for Chicago (NL). He laced a base-knock in the 6th
inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 7th inning. Chicago (NL)
managed 12 hits in their victory.

Rich Harden(6-6) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Harden got help
from Angel Guzman who earned his 3rd save. Ryan Madson(3-5) suffered the
loss in relief.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Harden said,
'this was one of those times.'

An early first inning lead for the Sox goes astray in the Rangers half of the first as they tee off against Josh Beckett with Andruw Jones' 3-run homerun and a solo shot for Marlon Byrd. Unfazed, Beckett bears down to his usual Beckett-esque self and goes to the 8th until Michael Young's homer finally sends him to the showers. Only the second loss since since early May for Beckett. Tommy Hunter holds the Sox at bay for the majority of the game and gets the win.

Had the possibility for four strikeouts in the first inning for Hunter if all had gone right. With two outs, Big Papi whiffed but the ball gets by Jason S. (you know who I mean) for a wild pitch with Ortiz going to first. Hunter gets the strikeout, but Ortiz goes to first. That was the only whiff of the inning though. There more or less can be an unlimited number of strikeouts in an inning, as long as the catcher keeps missing the ball for either a wild pitch or passes ball on the third strike. It has never happen in the majors, but has happened three times in the minors, most recently in 2008. I don't know if this link will come through okay in the blog, but you can still see this article by putting this into the search bar anyway.

July 20, 2009 Cubs 13, Phillies 2

Back bloggin' again! Chase Utley and Ryan Howard do their jobs by knocking one out, Utley's 18th and Howard's 31st, but the Philly pitchers can't hold back the homer-happy Cubbies as they slap five out of the yard and put 13 runs on the scoreboard for the second-most lopsided loss for the Phillies on the season. The most lopsided - a 13-0 loss to the Padres back in April. Those two games and one other one are the only times the Phillies have allowed 10 runs or more in a game.

The loss ends a 6 game winning streak for the Phillies, but they still maintain a three game lead over Florida in the NL East.

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Jayson Werth robbed Koyie Hill of a Homerun!

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez went deep and had 2 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park as
the Chicago (NL) Cubs embarrassed the Philadelphia Phillies by the lopsided
score of 13 to 2.

Philadelphia was unable to claim the lead after Chicago (NL) went ahead in the
3rd inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. Koyie Hill hit a
bases-empty home run. Ted Lilly was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out. Kosuke Fukudome followed, but he was set down on strikes. Ryan
Theriot came up and he stroked a single. Derrek Lee was the next batter, but
he struck out. Chicago (NL) had 17 hits overall, while Philadelphia had 4.

Lilly(9-4) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Rodrigo Lopez(1-1)
was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 2
walks in 4 innings.
