July 9, 2009 Red Sox 5, Royals 4

The Sox see the Kansas City Royals for the first time this year, and KC shows why they have the worst record in the American League. One of the sloppiest innings I have probably seen the Sox play (2 errors, 4 hits including a homer) give the Royals an early 3-0 lead before the Sox even get to bat, but the Sox mount the comeback and eventually tie the game 4-all in the 6th. In the bottom of the 9th, Mark Kotsay comes through again knocking Jacoby Ellsbury home on a walk-off double and a nice come from behind win. The win, combined with a Yankees loss to the red-hot Twins (31-5 last 36 games) as Minnesota completes a series sweep, puts the Sox back into a tie for first with the Bombers.

Boston Red Sox won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Kansas City Royals at Fenway
Park pulling it out in their last at bats, 5 to 4.
 
Boston scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded,
Jacoby Ellsbury doubled.  Jason Varitek came to the plate and drew a walk.
Mark Kotsay then doubled giving Boston the victory as 37,206 happy fans
celebrated wildly.  Kansas City had 11 hits in the game while Boston had 8,
but Boston had the more timely hits.  
 
The victory was credited to Takashi Saito(4-0) who went 1/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Juan Cruz(2-2) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 and
1/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.

July 8, 2009 Reds 7, Phillies 6

This game almost reminds me of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series in a way. Not down to the letter, but almost eerie.

The Reds lead throughout, getting 6 runs off of Rodrigo Lopez and with Homer Bailey stymying the Phillies hold a 6-0 lead entering the 8th inning. The Phils finally get to the tiring Bailey in the 8th when Jimmy Rollins singles and Shane Victorion knocks him home on a triple for the first Phillie run. Ryan Howard singles to keep the rally going, and Bailey gives way to Francisco Cordero. Cordero sucks the joint out for the second time in three games when Jayson Werth gets hold of the first pitch and knocks it over the wall. Suddenly, 6-4 Reds lead.

With two out in the 9th and the bases empty, Shane Victorino walks and Chase Utley knocks Vic home and himself when he smokes one over the wall for a sudden 6-all tie. Comeback is complete. But it doesn't last, as the Reds suck the wind right out of the Phils sails in the top of the 10th. Scot tEyre hits Jonny Gomes with a pitch and a single for Curtis Dickerson put runners on first and second, when a routine grounder by Jerry Hairston to Ryan Howard goes right through Howard's legs. Nobody to back him up, so a two basea advancement for everyone with Gomes crossing the plate. Eyre intentionally walks Joey Votto to load th bases and gives way to Brad Lidge, who gets a home-to-first doubleplay and a groundout to end the inning..Damage already done though, and the Phils go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th. For the normally reliable Cordero, 2/3 of an inning with two runs allowed with a loss two games ago vs. the Phils, and 3 runs in an inning and 2/3 today but gets a gift-wrapped win.

Joey Votto hit a homerun and had 4 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park where the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings 7 to 6.
 
The score was tied at 6 after nine.  Cincinnati was victorious in the 10th
inning.  Jonny Gomes was hit by a pitch.  Chris Dickerson stepped into the
batter's box and he laced a one-base hit.  Jerry Hairston Jr then reached on
an error.  Votto stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load the
bases.  Brandon Phillips came to the plate and grounded into a double play.
Philadelphia was set down quietly in the bottom of the 10th.  
 
The winning pitcher was Francisco Cordero(2-2) who allowed 3 runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Cordero was helped out by Josh Roenicke who recorded his 1st save.
Scott Eyre(2-3) was charged with the loss in relief.  He was a hard-luck
loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

July 8, 2009 Red Sox 6, A's 3

Tim Wakefield struggles early when Oakland gets two runs in their half of the first inning, but a 2-run homerun for Kevin Youkilis in the Sox half of the first gives them a 3-2 lead, and Mark Kotsay adds a 2-run shot of his own in the 4th. Wake settled down after that first inning and seemed to grow stronger as the game went on, retiring 11 of the last 12 hitters including striking out 4 of the last 5 for a season high 8 whiffs in the complete game effort.

Current 8-4 run for the Sox though has gained them nothing in the standings though, still a game behind the Yankees.

Tim Wakefield went the distance and Mark Kotsay jacked one out of the ballyard
and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics by the
score of 7 to 3 at Fenway Park.
 
The game started off with Boston taking the lead in the first as they scored 3
runs on 4 base hits.  The highlight belonged to Kevin Youkilis who thrilled
the crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.  Boston had a total
of 12 hits for the game.  
 
Wakefield(6-5) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Trevor
Cahill(1-7) was the loser.  He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 and
1/3 innings.

Phillies halfway stats

At the midway point of the season, the Phillies find themselves in possession of the National League's best record, and with a 2 game lead in the NL east over the Florida Marlins. The Phillies have stayed in first place for the entire month of June, taking over first from the Marlins on May 31st. A refreshing start, since it seems like for all of my SOM years the Phillies have always started off slow before kicking it into gear at about the midway point.

Plenty of batters on the NL leaderboard, capped by of course Ryan Howard. Howard sits a current second in the MVP voting, and also runs 2nd in homers, 3rd in run scored, 6th in RBI, 3rd in slugging percentage (.615), but unfortunately third in strikeouts. Chase Utley sits 3rd in RBI (part of the reason why Howard's RBI aren't higher), Jimmy Rollins runs 6th in stolen bases even with his rough .245 batting average, while Shane Victorino sits 4th in runs scored and in the top 10 in hits and steals. Jayson Werth, while dwarfed by Howard's numbers, rather quietly makes the leaderboard in homers, RBI, and slugging percentage with his 20 HR and 57 RBI.

What has been most surprising to me so far has been the Phillie pitching, specifically the bullpen. The pitching staff currently has the best ERA in the NL, and only Seattle is lower in the majors in ERA. That has all been done rather quietly it seems, as unlike the batters the only pitchers on the major leaderboard are Jamie Moyer (8 wins tiedfor 4th), J.A. Happ (top 10 in ERA), and Brad Lidge (top 10 in saves). Also Moyer and Cole Hamels run 4th and 7th in the league in run support at 5.63 and 5.50 respectively. For the starters, an ERA of 3.94 which ain't bad until you look at the relievers ERA of 3.02.

July 7, 2009 Phillies 4, Reds 3

The Phillies hit the halfway mark by pulling one out of the fire late when one of the most awesome players of all time, Matt Stairs, whacks a pinch-hit homerun out of the yard in the 8th inning to give the Phils their third straight win. Way lopsided in the hit collumn with the Phillies holding the 16-7 edge, but 13 left on base made the game closer than it should have been.

Citizen's Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds by
the count of 4 to 3.
 
Tyler Walker(1-1) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief performance.
No one was able to reach base in his 1 inning.  Philadelphia had 16 hits for
the game and Cincinnati had 7.  
 
Ryan Madson got the save, his 6th.  Nick Masset(2-6) was the loser in relief.
He allowed 4 hits and no walks in 1 inning.

Josh Beckett dominated striking out 10 Oakland batters as the Boston Red Sox
defeated the Oakland Athletics by a score of 6 to 1 at Fenway
Park.
 
Beckett(11-5) was very good in the win.  He allowed just 4 hits and 3 walks in
7 innings.  The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was
able to score again.  
 
Dana Eveland(2-3) suffered the loss.  He gave up 4 runs in 2 innings of work.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Beckett - except Oakland.  Bob
Geren lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight.  He was keeping our guys off
balance all game.  A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun
game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

July 6, 2009 Phillies 6, Reds 5

Looking at the line score through the first third of the game, the Reds had 4 hits with 3 of those being doubles while the Phillies had only one hit, and a score of 3-0. Who do you think led? The Phillies!! Jayson Werth's 20th homer of the season, a 3-run blast in the first inning after a HBP and a walk enabled that to happen, and the Phils led throughout the game until things turn lively in the 8th. The Reds got two in the top of the 8th on a Jay Bruce homer off of Chad Durbin to take the lead, but the Phillies come right back to get those two back in the bottom of the inning and hold on with Brad Lidge going a spotless 9th for his 16th save.

39,455 fans watched an exciting game at Citizen's Bank Park.  The Philadelphia
Phillies topped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 6 to
5.
 
Philadelphia won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring
2 runs on 4 hits.  After an out was recorded, Pedro Feliz got things rolling
when he doubled.  Carlos Ruiz came next and he lined a base-hit.  One out
later, Jimmy Rollins stepped up to the plate and he stroked a one-base hit.
Shane Victorino followed and he singled.  Victorino was safe on a stolen
base.  Chase Utley got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on
strikes.  Philadelphia banged out 11 hits on the night.  
 
Scott Eyre(2-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Brad
Lidge gained credit for his 16th save.  Francisco Cordero(1-2) was the loser
in relief.  
 
Philadelphia now has a record of a division leading 47-33. With the loss,
Cincinnati has a record of 3-7 lately, 39-42 overall.
