end of June standings

The Phillies still sit in first place in the NL East where they have been the entire month, while the Sox took over first foir about a week and fell back to second place behind the Yankees. But, the big story of the month is the Minnesota Twins, who have won 13 straight games and a June best 23-4 as part of a recent 25-4 run. Going the other way is the Chicago Cubs, losers of 9 in a row and 12 of their last 13.

Despite that, the worst June record belongs to the New York Mets at 7-20 and have lost 10 of their last 12 games just ending a 7 game losing streak. Probably the most surprising team so far in regards to their final record is the Pittsburgh Pirates, sitting only 5 games below .500 and had an earlier 11 game winning streak toward the end of May immediately after losing 15 of 16 with a 9 game losing streak.

That got me thinking of teams who have had winning and losing streaks of 10 or more games in the same season. The one that comes to mind immediately is the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers won their first 13 games for a 13-0 start (tying the 1982 Braves for the best start ever) and by May 2nd were at an unbelievable 20-3. That all went down the shitter when an immediate 12 game losing streak followed to start a 2-18 tailspin so after it was over by the end of May the Brewers were a .500 team at 22-21 overall.

There I am sure others somewhere.

June 30, 2009 Braves 4, Phillies 3

A good beginning, a bad ending. The Phillies score single runs in the first three innings with Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each knocking one over the wall along with a Rollins RBI triple off of Derek Lowe, but they are held scoreless the rest of the way. Joe Blanton sails through the first six innings to keep the lead 3-0, but comes unglued in the 7th. Chipper Jones leads off the inning with a solo homerun, Brian McCann singles and Casey Kotchman walks. Jeff Francoeur rips one out to left with McCann heading home, but Greg Dobbs's throw home goes wild for the error enabling Kotchman to go to third and Francoeur to second. Pinch-hitter Matt Diaz is intentionally walked to set up a doubleplay, Chad Durbin takes over on the mound but a perfect squeeze bunt for Yunel Escobar lets Kotchman cross home to tie the game.

Escobar comes through again in the 9th against Tyler Walker's 0.00 ERA, slugging one over the wall for the walk-off homer and Walker's first run allowed in 10 innings for the season and Walker's first loss in a Phillie uniform. Rafael Soriano gets the win for the Braves by retiring the final Phillie batter in the 9th and being in the right place at the right time.

Atlanta Braves won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Philadelphia Phillies at
Turner Field pulling it out in their last at bats, 4 to 3.

Atlanta scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After two were out Yunel
Escobar cracked a solo homerun giving Atlanta the win and sending the home
town fans into a frenzy. Philadelphia had 11 hits in the game while Atlanta
had 8, but Atlanta had the more timely hits.

Rafael Soriano(4-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Tyler Walker(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.

June 30, 2009 Orioles 11, Red Sox 9

The month of June closes out with a bang in Baltimore in what early on looked like a laugher turns into a slugfest. John Smoltz pitches how you would expect a 42 year old to pitch in the first two innings as the O's jump out to a 6-0 lead, but Smoltz bears down and the Sox take him off the hook with 6 unanswered runs, capped by a Youk 3-run homer. A run in the bottom of the 5th charged to Smoltz puts him back in line for the loss, but two more in the top of the 6th give Boston their first lead of the game, 8-7. However, the Orioles go to work off of the trio of Justin Masterson, Ramon Ramirez and Hideki Okajima for four more runs and the eventual victory. Sox almost come back in the 9th, scoring a run and getting two on before Dustin Pedroia strikes out to end the game.

All 18 position starters get at least one hit except for Baltimore shortstop Robert Andino. Three hits and 3 RBI for Youk, Jason Varitek knocks home three, and a nice pinch-hit solo shot for JD Drew. Baltimore catcher Matt Weiters falls a home run shy of the cycle on a 3 for 4 day.

Play account follows the game.

Second baseman Brian Roberts cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Baltimore
Orioles outscored the Boston Red Sox 11 to 9.

Boston was unable to claim the lead after Baltimore went ahead in the 6th
inning when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. Boston threatened in the 9th but
Baltimore was able to put down the rally.

The victory was credited to Danys Baez(3-1) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Baez got relief help from George Sherrill who gained credit
for his 7th save. The loss was charged to Justin Masterson(2-5) in relief.
He allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Terry Francona 'but it's losing the close
ones that really hurt.'

The rise of the Minnesota Twins

In the opposite of your Cleveland Indians, the Minnesota Twins have been riding a hell of a run lately. While in consecutive games won it isn't as dramatic although still a 12 game winning streak, it is what has happened in the month of June for the Twins. On May 29th, after a loss to Tampa Bay the Twins sat 2 games below the .500 mark at 24-26, but still only 1/2 game out of first behind Detroit. Since then, the Twins have a 24-4 run including winning their last 12 straight and 10 of 11 to begin the run to open up a huge 8 game lead on the now second place Tigers.

That 24-4 run gives the Twins a tie for their best run ever, basically their best record in any 28 game stretch, tying he 1991 World Series winning team. The franchise also had a 24-4 run in 1932 when they were the first Washington Senators team before moving to Minnesota in 1961. One more win for their 13th straight and a 25-4 run gives them their best run ever in either location. Still a few more to go though for the longest winning streak in team history, which is by the 1991 team who won 15 straight.

BTW, the major league record for consecutive wins is 26 for the 1916 New York Giants, with a tie game thrown into the streak that did not count in the standings. For consecutive wins with no ties, the record is 21 for the Chicago Cubs in 1935. You may remember 2002, when the Oakland A's set the AL record with a 20 game winning streak.

June 29, 2009 Red Sox 7, Orioles 3

After two sub-par starts, Jon Lester gets some of his mojo back and gets his 10th win of the year, with plenty of support from his teammates. Jason Bay is the biggest supporter, blasting his 15th homerun for a 3-run shot, adds another RBI on a single, and just misses another RBI on a sacrafice fly when Youk leaves third too early. David Ortiz gets four hits with a double, and JD Drew's 10th dinger of the year adds to the scoring. Interesting day for Youk, as he does get two hits along with three walks for a perfect day at the plate.

Plenty of defense in the middle innings, as the web gems at the bottom will tell you!

The Boston Red Sox toppled the Baltimore Orioles by a 7 to 3 score at Camden
Yards.

Boston scored 3 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. The big
moment was provided by Jason Bay who quieted the home crowd when he smacked a
three-run homer. Boston finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Jon Lester(10-2) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Jason
Berken(2-3) was the loser. He gave up 5 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.

June 28, 2009 Phillies 3, Blue Jays 1

Six of the 8 Phillie hits go for doubles with two doubles each for Chase Utley and Eric Bruntlett, and it all gives Jamie Moyer his team-leading 8th win of the year. Brad Lidge does allow a 9th inning homerun to Lyle Overbay to spoil a shutout, but nonetheless gets his 14th save and first since coming back from the DL. A sweep in Toronto for the Phils.

For the interleague play, it will give the Phillies an even 9-9 record thanks to the sweep. After an off day, the road trip will end against the reeling Braves, who were just swept by the Red Sox.

Jamie Moyer(8-5) and Brian Tallet(6-6) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with
Moyer and the Philadelphia Phillies coming out on top of the Toronto Blue
Jays 3 to 1.

Philadelphia took the lead for good in the 6th inning scoring a single run
utilizing 2 base hits. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Brad Lidge recorded his 14th save.

June 28, 2009 Red Sox 2, Braves 0

Brad Penny gets his best start in over a month and gets two hits to help his cause, but despite that and 3 steals for Jacoby Ellsbury none of it did any good with Braves starter Tommy Hanson (almost put Tommy Hodson lol) holding the Sox scoreless for the first 7 innings. The two Jasons, Bay and Varitek, both walk and Nick Green sends them both home on a double in the 8th to break the scoreless tie. Score should have been higher, but the Sox leave 12 stranded including the bases loaded twice. The win gives the Sox a sweep of the Braves, with two of the gamnes being shutouts. Atlanta only scores one run in the three games.

It also concludes the interleague play at a 12-6 clip for Boston. Only the New York Yankees (who the Sox still trail by a game) and Minnesota Twins fared better at 14-4 each, with the Twins riding a current 11 game winning streak and a huge 7 game lead in the AL Central.

The Phils storm out of the gate, knocking Jays starter Brad Mills out of the game in the very first inning via a Chase Utley RBI single and a 3-run bomb for John Mayberry Jr. They wouldn't score again, but no more scoring was needed as J. A. Happ and Ryan Madson combine on the shutout.

Happ goes to 5-1 as a starter as he wins his 5th straight start. More impressive, in three of his seven starts he has allowed no runs for a 2.23 ERA for his 7 starts compared to a 4.58 ERA in 10 relief appearances before moving to the rotation a bit more than a month ago.
