June 26, 2009 Red Sox 5, Braves 0

The Red Sox conclude their interleague play with a three game series in Atlanta against their former city brothers, and Mark Kotsay shines on both sides of the ball. First, Kotsay's first homerun in a Red Sox uniform, good for a 2-run shot, gives the Sox their first runs of the game in the 2nd inning. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Kotsay keeps the Braves off the board with a leaping catch at the wall which robs Diory Hernandez of what would have been a 3-run homerun to end the game. Josh Beckett, Daniel Bard and Justin Masterson combine on the shutout. For Beckett, his 9th win of the year ties teammate Jon Lester for second in the league behind Jarrod Washburn's 10.

As I am sure you probably know, the Braves are the only major league team to win a World Series championship in three different cities. 1914 and 1948 in Boston, 1957 in Milwaukee and 1995 in Atlanta. The only other team to be in three different cities is the A's, who won 5 World Series in Philadelphia and 4 in Oakland but none while in Kansas City from 1955 to 1967. Those fans in the Midwest must have been pretty pissed when the A's went to five straight championship series from 1971-75 while winning 3 World Series only four years after having 13 losing seasons in Kansas City.
