June 25, 2009 Rays 6, Phillies 5

Four runs for the Phillies in the 3rd inning and a single run in the 6th looked like it would hold up, until the bottom of the 9th. Brad Lidge, fresh off the DL, gets a doubleplay to end the 8th but allows a double and throws a wild pitch in the 9th. Maybe Lidge came back a bit too soon for a save chance, so I hand the ball to Ryan Madson who has served the closer role well in Lidge's abscence. Not today though. After a walk and a squeeze play brings the tying run home, Carl Crawford pokes one to the outfield for the game-winning single. It made Rays starter Andy Sonnastine a happy man, as until the Rays 9th inning uprising he was in line to drop to 0-8 for the year. Old friend Pat Burrell knocks in three of the Rays runs, but wasn't responsible for any of the runs in the 9th inning.

The loss also drops the Phillies (40-30) into a virtual tie with the Florida Marlins (42-32) for the NL East lead. I neglected to mention that with the Red Sox loss to the Nationals, it dropped them out of first place and they now sit one game behind the Yankees.

It was a great finish at Tropicana Field as the Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a
dramatic comeback beating the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 6 to
5.

Tampa Bay came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2
runs using 2 hits. Willy Aybar led off and started the rally when he
doubled. After an out was recorded, Brad Lidge stepped up to the plate and
he bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch. Gabe Gross then drew a walk.
B.J. Upton stepped in and he worked the squeeze play to perfection. Carl
Crawford came to the plate and laced a one-base hit. Tampa Bay finished with
10 hits in the victory.

The victory went to J.P. Howell(4-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Ryan Madson(3-3) suffered the loss in relief. By giving up 1 run without
retiring a batter his ERA increased from 2.16 to 2.43.

'What a game!,' Howell said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'
