| A pitcher's duel in the beginning, it looked at first like Joe Blanton would have only himself to blame for a loss. In the bottom of the 5th, he walks Pat Burrell who gets bunted to second and goes to third on a groundout. Blanton lets one go wide of home plate for the wild pitch with Burrell coming home and a 1-0 Rays lead. Meanwhile, Tampa starter Matt Garza was holding the Phils hitless through the first 5 innings. Jimmy Rollins leads off the 6th with a single for the first hit of the game, followed by a Ryan Howard 25th homer of the year and a 2-1 lead. But, the Rays get to Blanton for 3 runs in the top of the 7th and the Phillie relief corps hold them scoreless the remainder of the game, however the Phillies can't score either and 4-2 is the final. Howard's 25 homeruns would tie him for the homer lead in the AL wit Ian Kinsler, but instead it puts him second place in the NL behind the 27 of Prince Fielder. After that torrid homer pace to begin the year, Howard has been held to only four homeruns so far in June with this being his first homerun in 12 days. Still on a pace for 59 dingers though. Good thing about the offense because so far Howard has made 13 errors at first base, only one off his real-life total for the season and on a pace for 30 errors in the season. That would be the highest total since "Dr. Strangeglove" Dick Stuart of the Red Sox made 29 errors at first base in 1963. I had to go back to 1919 to find the most recent 30 error first baseman. Howard has led the NL in first baseman errors the last three seasons. The father of a Phillie who played today, John Mayberry Sr., led the AL in errors at first base with 15 in 1975. |
