June 23, 2009 Red Sox 4, Nationals 3

Two struggling pitchers, John Lanaan with his 1-10 record and ERA over 7.00 for the Nationals and Brad Penny for the Sox, loser of his last five starts and an ERA over 6.00, take the mound in what ends up a classic pitchers duel. Both pitchers are sharp, keeping it a 1-1 game until the Sox get two in the top of the 5th. I elect to let Penny hit in the top of the 7th, which came back to bite me in the ass as the Nats get two in the bottom of the 7th off of him to tie the game.

Some classic National League small ball gets the Sox the win in the top of the 9th. With Joe Beimel on the mound for the Nationals, Jason Varitek leads off with a single. Julio Lugo comes in to pinch-run, and is bunted to second on a sacrafice for Jacoby Ellsbury. A Nick Green groundout sends Lugo to third, but records the second out. With the pitcher due up, Rocco Baldelli comes in to pinch-hit agains the lefty Beimel. Right-hander Julian Tavares takes over on the mound, and I counter with the lefty David Ortiz to pinch-hit in place of Baldelli. It works like a charm, as Papi smokes a double with Lugo scoring easily with the go-ahead run. Papelbon works a spotless 9th save for a walk, and records his 16th save. Neither Penny or Lanaan are involved in the decision.

This would be the first visit to our nation' capital for the Red Sox in almost 38 years since September 26, 1971 with their last game against the Washington Senators in the Senators next-to-last home series. Five days before that game, it had been already announced that the Senators would be moving to Texas for the next season. In the Senators final game of the year against the Yankees, a 7-5 lead in top of the 9th with 2 out game turns into a 9-0 Yankees win. The security for the final game left early and about 15,000 fans just walk in for the game without paying. The fans storm the field with one out remaining in the game, tearing the bases out of the ground and ripping up the grass, home plate, anything that they could for souveniers since they already knew that the team was leaving. With no security to stop the unruly mob, the game gets forfeited to the Yankees. Next season the Senators are rechristened the Texas Rangers, leaving Washington without a baseball team for the first time in history and for 33 years until the former Expos came to town.

An added note: the Senators manager for their final three years in DC and their first year in Texas was former Red Sox player Ted Williams!
