June 13, 2009 Red Sox 6, Phillies 2

Almost identical score to yesterday's game, Mike Lowell's 3-run shot off of Antonio Bastardo knocks the Bastard to the showers in his first major league loss as his ERA goes up 266 points! Jason Varitek and Kevin Youkilis also homer for the Red Sox, as they win their 7th of last 8 games. A Jimmy Rollins 2-run homerun accounts for all of the Phils scoring. In something I never thought I would do, I bring David Ortiz into the game defensively at first base (yes, on defense) as part of a double switch for the Sox!

Bastardo's scoreless streak to begin his career is ended at 15 innings with Youk's homer in the first inning. Technically it would be 15 2/3 innings, but per rules it revertes back to the last completed inning in regards to scoreless inning streaks unless the pitcher is taken out of the game in the middle of an inning without a run scoring. I found that out while looking up who has the record for scoreless innings to begin a career, which is Brad Ziegler of the A's at 39 scoreless innings to begin his career, just set in 2008. That shattered the old record of 25 set way back in 1907. Not a bad run for the Bastard at 15 innings, but nowhere close to the record.

Boston scored 4 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 5 hits. The key
offensive moment was provided by Mike Lowell who silenced the stadium when he
lofted a three-run 'big-fly'. Boston had 9 hits for the night.

Daisuke Matsuzaka(3-2) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Antonio Bastardo(2-1) suffered the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 and 1/3
innings of work.

Philadelphia has a 6-4 record of late, 34-26 overall.

June 12, 2009 Red Sox 6, Phillies 3

If the Phillies are going to be cooled off, losing the Sox is a good way to do it as two of the top four teams in baseball do battle. David Ortiz's first start of interleague play at first base goes flawlessly on defense, and he also shines on offense with a grand slam homerun in the 5th to knock Phils starter Joe Blanton from the game. Blanton allows all 6 Sox runs for his first loss in over a month, and Jon Lester on the Sox side strikes out 10 for his AL leading 9th win of the year.

All three Phillie runs come on homeruns with a Carlos Ruiz dinger of Lester in the 5th and a 2-run rip for Ryan Howard in the bottom of the 9th off Manny Declarmen. Youk also homered for the Sox with a solo shot, with their other run coming on a Pedroia sac fly.

FYI, the other two top four teams besides the Sox and Phils are #2 Texas (36-24) and #1 Colorado (36-23).

David Ortiz hit a grand slam and Jon Lester whiffed 10 batters as the Boston
Red Sox defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 6 to 3 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

Lester(9-2) looked very much in control throughout the night. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Overall Boston
out-hit Philadelphia 9 to 5.

Joe Blanton(5-2) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'Everything felt great' Lester said.
'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'

June 11, 2009 Phillies 6, Mets 2

Despite being outhit by the Mets 12-7 and trailing after the first inning 2-0, the Phils come alive and take out the broom, winning their 5th straight. Jimmy Rollins gets three hits, falling a homer shy of the cycle. In a statistical oddidity, the Phillies pitchers did not strike out a single hitter today!

Interleague is next on the schedule, as the Phillies go back home after a 10 game road trip to take on the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Orioles, then travel to two opposite ends of the spectrum - Tampa Bay and Toronto.

At Citi Field the Philadelphia Phillies easily handled the New York (NL) Mets
by the score of 6 to 2.

Philadelphia tallied 2 runs in the 6th inning. The big moment was provided by
Chris Coste who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he doubled which
was good for two runs. New York (NL) had 12 hits in the game while
Philadelphia had 7, but Philadelphia had the more timely hits.

Jamie Moyer(6-4) got the win allowing 2 runs in 5 innings. Tim Redding(0-2)
was hit with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings.

The winning ways continue for Philadelphia. They now have a record of 8-2 in
recent days. New York (NL) can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'.
Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

June 11, 2009 Yankees 7, Red Sox 2

The Sox trail from the get-go, as the Yanks get 5 runs in the first 3 innings off of Brad Penny and cruise to the easy win and avoid a sweep. Jason Bay knocks home both runs with a 2-run homerun in the 4th of of C. C. Sabitha. Sabitha goes the distance at 142 pitches for the complete game.

New York actually needed the win to bust out of a 1-8 slump. The hottest team in baseball in May at 20-8, they had already evened that loss mark so far for June, now at 2-8 for the month with today;s win.

Next on the schedule is the interleague play, with the Sox getting a quick three game road trip in Philly, back home to play the Marlins and Braves, and back on the road in Washington and Atlanta with all series being three games.

June 10, 2009 Phillies 13, Mets 5

Not content with their 14-3 pasting of the Mets last game, the Phils run on all cylinders again and make sure right off the top that Mets starter Mike "Bats in the" Pelfrey does not duplicate 2007. Pelfrey no-hit the Phillies in the 2007 SOM if you recall, but Jimmy Rollins makes sure tha twill not happen today with a leadoff home run. Ryan Howard also adds a homer in that first inning, and a 3-run smash for Shane Victorino in the 2nd send Pelfrey to the showers. Rollins smokes another ball into the seats for a 4 for 5, 4 RBI, 4 runs scored, two homer day and Chase Utley adds to the barrage knocking one into the seats for five Phillie homers on the day. Cole Hamels just sits quietly by, does his thing, and gets an easy win.

Interesting stats for Mets pitcher Bobby Parnell. After today, he has a 5-0 record but a sky-high 7.75 ERA!!! The reason for that is game like this - today's 5 run, 2 inning performance to go along with others like 7 runs in 2 2/3, 9 runs in 1 1/3, 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning and 5 runs in 1 2/3 for a sample of some of the shittiness.

Jimmy Rollins smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
outscored the New York (NL) Mets 13 to 5.

Rollins had a great evening at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the
1st inning, doubled in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in the 6th inning
and rifled a three-run blast in the 7th inning. Overall Philadelphia out-hit
New York (NL) 17 to 10.

The victory went to Cole Hamels(5-3) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Mike Pelfrey(2-4) suffered the loss. He served up 4 homeruns in his 1
and 1/3 innings.

Rollins was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the
ball real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying
off. That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes
along.'

June 10, 2009 Red Sox 9, Yankees 6

Nick Green is the sparkplug of offense, ripping out two homeruns and driving home 5. His 2nd inning 3-run homerun knocked Chein-Ming Wang out of the game, and his 2-run homer in the 8th proved in the end to be a valuable shot. JD Drew, Dustin Pedroia and Jason Bay also go deep for the Sox.

A 5-1 Red Sox lead after 6 innings turns wild at the end. First, Takashi Saito throws wild past first base on a pickoff attempt allowing the runner on third base to score an unearned run in the 7th, and then all this:

Nick Green smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
New York (AL) Yankees 9 to 6 at Fenway Park.

Green enjoyed a great evening at the plate. Every time he came up in the
latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He smacked a three-run
homer in the 2nd inning, laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning and bombed a
two-run dinger in the 8th inning. New York (AL) threatened in the 9th but
Boston was able to put down the rally.

Tim Wakefield(3-4) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win.
Chien-Ming Wang(0-3) took the loss. Terry Francona was beaming after the
game, 'Not only were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed
to have 'eyes'! I just love winning these tight ones! It was just our evening
- no doubt about it!'

June 9, 2009 Phillies 14, Mets 3

The Phillies set season highs for runsand hits as they give the Mets and Johan Santana a shellacking that they will not forget anytime soon. Almost half of the 21 hits belong to Shane Victorini and Ryan Howard. Victorino goes 5 for 6, hitting a homerun in the 9th to hit for the cycle, and Howard gets a 4 for 6 day with two doubles. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana allows 9 of those runs and 14 hits through 3+ innings in the worst start of his career.

At least at this point of his career it would the worst. On June 14 of 2009 in real life, which would be his next start, he allowed 9 runs in 3 innings in a game against the Yankees. His worst start would be in 2010 on May 2nd, when he allowed 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings in a game oddly enough against the Phillies! Just for curiosity's sake, lets see which of those three starts would be the worst using the game scores:

Today's game - 3 innings, 14 hits, 9 runs (all earned), 0 BB, 2 K game score of -3
Game of 6-14-09 - 3 innings, 9 hits, 9 runs (all earned), 2 BB, 3 K game score of 6
Game of 5-2-10 - 3 2/3 innings, 8 hits, 10 runs (all earned), 2 BB, 1 K game score of 4

They all suck, but judge for yourself which one was worse.

Shane Victorino hit for the cycle and had 3 RBI at Citi Field as the
Philadelphia Phillies belted the New York (NL) Mets by the count of 14 to
3.

Victorino was a source of great heartache for the New York (NL) faithful all
evening. He just kept pounding out hits! He doubled in the 1st inning,
stroked a single plating a run in the 2nd inning, tripled in the 4th inning,
singled in the 5th inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 9th inning.
Philadelphia bats were hot in the 4th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits.
Philadelphia kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6
different innings.

J.A. Happ(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 2
runs. The losing pitcher was Johan Santana(3-5). He allowed Philadelphia 9
runs in 3 innings of work.

'I had good swings tonight,' Victorino said, 'Everything felt right'.

June 9, 2009 Red Sox 6, Yankees 1

Josh Beckett continues to pitch how you would expect the ace of the staff to, winning his 5th straight start in an early season battle of AL East supremacy between the arch rival Sox and Yankees. Beckett holds the Yanks scoreless over almost 8 innings, and over his last five starts he is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.18 including pitching scoreless ball in his last two starts. Leigh Teixeira's husband spoils the combined shutout bid with a 9th inning homerun off of Ramon Ramirez.

Speaking of scoreless inning streaks, in the Phillies game that I could not blog they shutout the Dodgers 4-0 with Antonio Bastardo going the distance in his second major league start with a three-hit shutout. Bastardo so far in his major league career is unscored upon in 15 innings and 2-0 with the shutout and going six shutout innings in his major league debut five days prior. Chase Utley knocked in all four Phillie runs with two doubles, knocking home Shane Victorino both times, and a two-run homerun with natrually Victorino scoring in front of him.

In a lop-sided win the Boston Red Sox ripped the New York (AL) Yankees by a 6
to 1 count.

Boston had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they
had 4 base hits. That early scoring held up. Boston ended up with 9 hits
for the game while New York (AL) had 5.

Josh Beckett(7-4) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 7 and 2/3
innings. A.J. Burnett(3-4) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 9 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
