June 7, 2009 Red Sox 12, Rangers 10

It turns out to be a slugfest, but it didn't look that way early. Daisuke Matsuzaka is knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning after allowing 7 runs to cross the plate as Texas takes a seemingly insurmountable 7-0 lead after only two innings. A wild Vincente Padilla, who walks 7, allows the Sox some early chances but two runners get thrown out at home trying to score. They finally poke through against Padilla with three runs in the 5th and four more in the 6th to tie the game.

Not done yet, Mike Lowell clears the bases with a 3-run double and David Ortiz follows up with a 2-run blast in the bottom of the 8th for five runs to give the Sox a 12-7 lead. They ended up needing those runs as Takashi Saito puts two on base in the 9th with Chris Davis knocking everyone home via a two out, 3-run homerun making the score 12-10. Paps takes the final out for the cheap save.

The unsung heroes today are Justin Masterson, Manny Declarmen and Daniel Bard. The only one with any credit for anything in the box score was Bard who gets the win, but they combine to hold the Rangers scoreless for 6 2/3 innings while their teammates teed off on the Texas pitchers for 12 unanswered runs with 3 2/3 or those innings for Masterson. This will be the first game for Masterson in which he has not allowed a run since his first appearance of the season two months ago in 14 total appearances, six of those starts.

June 6, 2009 Red Sox 11, Rangers 7

A well-rounded offense does the job today with all starters today scoring at least once execpt for Rocco Baldelli and all getting at least one hit except for NicK Green. Highlights - Jacoby Ellsbury at 4 for 4 with two doubles and a sac bunt, Mike Lowell 3 for 5 with a 3-run homer, and a two-run blast for Jason Bay.

It all brings home a win for Jon Lester, his 8th on the year, as he also passes the 100 strikeout mark with 7 in the game. His third in the game (Jarrod S., I won't bother to spell the longest name in baseball history LOL) being number 100. The 8 wins ties Lester with the Giants' Matt Cain and Jarrod Washburn of the Mariners for the major league lead, and Lester's now 104 strikeouts puts him second in the majors behind the 112 from theTigers' Justin Verlander.

Third baseman Mike Lowell cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox
defeated the Texas Rangers 11 to 7 at Fenway Park.

Boston tallied 6 runs in the 3rd inning with the help of 5 hits. The
highlight belonged to Jason Bay who thrilled the crowd when he cracked a
two-run shot. Boston managed 15 hits in their victory.

The victory went to Jon Lester(8-2) who went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs. Derek
Holland(1-3) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of
work.

June 6, 2009 Phillies 8, Dodgers 4

Both starters, Joe Blanton for the Phillies and Hiroki Kuroda for the Dodgers, are dominant early trading goose-eggs through the first 5 innings. The Phils finally get through with a 3-run 6th, but the lead evaporates when the Dodgers get two of their own in their half of the 6th and two more in the 7th. Chase Utley's solo homerun in the top of the 8th ties the game, and the Phils put it out of reach with a four run 9th via an RBI single for Jayson Werth, a 2-run double for Utley, and a 2-run double for Pedro Feliz. Brad Lidge takes the 9th in a non-save situation and strikes out two lowering the ERA to a miniscule 0.44 with only one run allowed in 20 1/3 innings of work and the 7th Phillie win in their last 10 games.

Chase Utley had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Dodger Stadium where the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 8 to 4.

Philadelphia came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning when they scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was
provided by Pedro Feliz who silenced Dodger Stadium as he doubled bringing in
two baserunners. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Ryan Madson(3-2) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Guillermo Mota(0-2) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run
in 1/3 of an inning and saw his ERA jump from 2.49 to 2.81.

June 5, 2009 Dodgers 8, Phillies 6

Jamie Moyer has one of the worst starts of his long career, knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning after allowing 8 hits and 7 runs. It could have been more, but Chan Ho Park shines in relief coming in with two on base by striking out the final two hitters of that 2nd inning and 5 overall while holding the Dodgers scoreless in 4 2/3 relief innings and hitting a double at the plate. The Phils get within a run with a four run 7th inning (three of those runs on a Chase Utley homerun), but can't get any closer as L.A. adds an insurance run in the 8th off of Chad Durbin.

In a good matchup it was the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 8, the Philadelphia
Phillies 6 at Dodger Stadium.

Orlando Hudson provided much of the offense. He doubled in the 1st inning,
smacked a three-run homer in the 2nd inning and lashed a single in the 4th
inning. For the game Los Angeles(NL) out-hit Philadelphia 14 to 10.

Eric Milton(3-0) allowed 5 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jonathan Broxton earned the save, his 19th. Jamie Moyer(5-4) was the loser.
He allowed 7 runs and 8 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

'He gutted it out' Joe Torre said of Milton. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

June 5, 2009 Rangers 8, Red Sox 1

The Sox come back home after a 5-5 road trip, but can't make the hometown faithful happy as Texas owned this game from the onset. The power-laden Rangers rip three balls over the fence while taking 8 runs on the board and knocking Brad Penny out of the game in the 4th inning. Texas starter Kevin Millwood doesn't even need all of the run support, holding the Red Sox scoreless through 8 innings of work. The Sox do finally get a run on the board with two out in the 9th off of reliever Jason Jennings to avoid the shutout.

The reason why I say the power-laden Rangers is because of this. You will notice that the three players who hit homeruns today all have homer totals in the teens - Michael Young hit his 19th, Hank Blalock his 16th and Chris Davis also hit his 16th. Those three along with Ian Kinsler hold three of the top four spots on the AL homer leader list. Young leads the league with his 19, Kinsler with 17 sits 3th, and Blalock and Davis are in a tie for 4th. If you are wondering, Justin Morneau and Leigh Teixeira's husband are tied for 2nd with 18 homers each.

The Rangers as a team have knocked 114 balls over the fence through only 54 games to this point (exactly one-third of the season) to easily lead the majors. Milwaukee with 96 and the Yankees with 91 are the only other teams over 90 homeruns. That homer pace I doubt will keep up the rest of the season since that would equal out to 342 homeruns (the most in history is 264 for the 1997 Mariners) but still a damn impressive power display so far for the boys from the Lone Star State.

First baseman Chris Davis hit one over the fence and scored 3 times at Fenway
Park as the Texas Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 8 to 1.

Texas started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. The early run support proved
sufficient for Kevin Millwood(6-4) and Texas. That was all the run support
Millwood required. Texas had 13 hits for the game and Boston had 8.

Brad Penny(5-4) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 7 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

June 4, 2009 Dodgers 2, Phillies 1 (11)

The Phillies begin a four game series at Chavez Ravine with a tough 11 inning loss. Matt Kemp's solo shot for the Dodgers in the 3rd was offset by a solo blast for Carlos Ruiz in the 5th for a 1-1 tie. It would remain 1-1 until the bottom of the 11th when Rafael Furcal leads off the inning for LA with a single and Orlando Hudson rips one to the wall with Furcal, who was off with the pitch on a hit and run attempt, scores easily for the winning run.

With all of the new ballparks opening and new teams in recent years, I found out an interesting tidbit regarding Dodger Stadium. It opened in 1962 which makes it the third oldest park in the major leagues, believe it or not, behind Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. Kind of surprised me a bit. In another interesting bit of trivia, there was also a Wrigley Field in Los Angeles which the Angels had as their home field in their first season of 1961, having been a minor league stadium since the mid 1920s. The Angels then shared Dodger Stadium with the Dodgers for the next four years until Anaheim Stadium opened in 1966. That is how the Chavez Ravine name came about as that is what the Angels called the stadium when they played there too. The LA Wrigley Field was torn down in the mid 1960s.

June 4, 2009 Tigers 3, Red Sox 2

Two Sox runs in the 6th, one scoring on a doubleplay grounder and one on a Jacoby Ellsbury single tie the score, taking Tim Wakefield off the hook in what is his best start in over a month. Justin Masterson holds the runners after Ramon Ramirez walks the first two Tigers in the 8th, but Masterson can't hold in for the 9th as a two out single for Adam Everett scoring Curtis Granderson gives Detroit the walk-off win.

Former Soxer Brandon Lyon gets credit for the win for the Tigers and Masterson is saddled with the loss in relief, putting his record as a reliever at 1-1.

In an exciting finish the Detroit Tigers pulled out a win over the Boston Red
Sox by a score of 3 to 2 at Comerica Park.

The deciding run was scored by Detroit in the 9th. Curtis Granderson doubled.
After another out, Ryan Raburn was the next batter, but he struck out. Adam
Everett then slapped a single making Detroit the victor and beginning a
joyous home town celebration. Detroit had only 6 hits for the game.

Brandon Lyon(5-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Justin
Masterson(2-4) was charged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and
2 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

June 3, 2009 Phillies 3, Padres 0

The Phillies shut out the Pads for the second consecutive game, scoring all three runs in the 3rd inning on back-to-back homeruns for Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. J. A. Happ goes 8 scoreless innings scattering 6 singles for the best performance of his young career, and Ryan Madson takes a spotless 9th for a save for the Phils 5th straight victory and opening up a 2 1/2 game lead in the NL East.

You may recall how I mentioned when Ryah Howard hit his 20th homerun and (sort of) became the fastest in history to 20 homers. Since that time he has been in a power outage with only one honerun over the previous 12 games until the homer today, which regains the major league homerun lead that had been a tie at 21 with Prince Fielder.

June 3, 2009 Red Sox 2, Tigers 0

It's a tight one, with a Dustin Pedroia sac fly in the 3rd and an RBI single in the top of the 9th to give the Sox a bit of breathing room. Josh Beckett wins his 4th straight start, Daniel Bard takes the 8th and was going to stay in for the 9th with the extra Sox run but after an out and a single lefty Hideki Okajima takes over and retires Tigers lefties Curtis Granderson and Jeff Larish to get the save.

The Tigers manager tried to get a bit of speed on the bases for the bottom of the 8th, and it ended up almost costly in the 9th. Ramon Santiago pinch-hit for shortstop Adam Everett, and speedy Josh Anderson came in to pinch-run for second baseman Placido Polaco. For the top of the 9th, that presented a defensive dilemma. Everett and Santiago are the only Tiger shortstops, and Polanco and Santiago are the only second baseman. With both Polanco and Everett now out of the game, Santiago took over at second and Anderson, an outfielder, took over at shortstop. He has never played a game at shortstop either in the minors or majors.

With that ol' SS-5 e88 now out there, first batter of the 9th Kevin Youkilis rips the first pitch right to Anderson, who muffs it for the error. Mike Lowell advances Youk to third with a single, and Youk scores the unearned run on the single for Varitek. With the 2-0 final it didn't prove all that costly after all for Detroit after all, lucky for them.

Boston took the lead for keeps in the top of the 3rd inning plating an
isolated run using 2 hits. That was all the offense they were to need.
Detroit was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.

Josh Beckett(6-4) allowed no runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.
Beckett got help from Hideki Okajima who was credited with his 1st save.
Armando Galarraga(2-3) was the losing pitcher.

The Boston ballclub's record now stands at 30-23. With the loss, the Detroit
ballclub's record is 23-28.

June 2, 2009 Phillies 3, Padres 0

The hits are even at three apiece, but some Padre wildness makes the difference today. Four consective walks in the 4th inning by Jake Peavy to Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez let a run trot home, and a Jayson Werth sac fly gives the Phillies two runs in the inning with zero hits. One more Phillie run in the 8th when pitcher Clay Condrey walks and eventually scores on a wild pitch by Luke Gregerson. It al makes Antonio Bastardo a very happy man as he goes 6 shutout innings is his major league debut for an easy win. Condrey and Brad Lidge take the final three innings to preserve the shutout.

That made for an interesting looking lineup on the game screen. Some of the names that are kind of long might not completely fit, like Shane Victorino's name comes up as Victori. That made Bastardo's name shows as (yep, you guessed it) Bastard! What it all means is that today, Bastard got his first major league Victori.

At Petco Park, the San Diego fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Antonio
Bastardo(1-0) finally bested his San Diego opposite, Jake Peavy(3-5), by the
score of 3 to 0.

In the 4th inning Philadelphia scored 2 runs. After an out was recorded,
Shane Victorino started the rally when he drew a walk. Victorino took his
lead and swiped second. Chase Utley then drew a walk. Ryan Howard came up
and he drew a walk to load the bases. Raul Ibanez came to the plate and drew
a walk. Jayson Werth added to the outburst and hit a sacrifice fly. Brad
Lidge relieved and was untouched by San Diego as he recorded the save, his
13th.

Peavy was hit with the loss. He pitched 7 innings allowing only 1 hit and 4
walks.

June 2, 2009 Rockies 15, Astros 6

Three reasons why I just had to post this one - 1) Rockies backup catcher Paul Phillips getting a start behind the plate and goes 5 for 6 with 6 RBI, 2) the ungodly pitching line for Astros reliever Russ Ortiz of 2 innings pitches with 9 hits and 9 runs, and 3) entering the 8th inning, the Rockies held a 5-0 lead. After the 8th inning, it was a 13-6 Rockies lead with 14 runs for both teams combined in the inning!!

June 2, 2009 Red Sox 5, Tigers 1

The Sox make the final stop of the road trip in the Motor City, and if you take out the top of the 5th this would be a 1-1 game. Four Sox runs cross the plate in that 5th inning, two on a Dustin Pedroia homerun. Kevin Youkilis added a homer of his own the previous inning. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches shutout ball until the 7th, and Paps gets a cheap save with coming into the game in the bottom of the 8th with a four run lead but two runners on base and the tying run after the batter on deck.

June 1, 2009 Phillies 4, Padres 3 (10)

The Phillies begin a 10 game road trip out west in San Diego, and not only get their first one-run game victory of the year but also their first extra inning win. The Phillies lose a 3-0 lead in the 6th when Joe Blanton load the bases but Clay Condrey can't hold the runners and allows all three to score. It remains tied through the regulation 9, and in the top of the 10th Raul Ibanez delivers with a homerun (his 14th) off of Luis Perdomo to give the Phillies their lead back. A perfect 10th for Brad Lidge nets him his 12th save, with the win going to Ryan Madson (2-1).

Shane Victorino gets a nice day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two doubles as does Carlos Ruiz, who knocks in two with a sac fly and his first homerun of the season.
