May 30, 2009 Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1

The Sox are held to only one hit by Brian Tallet, a double for Mike Lowell in the 4th inning which knocked Kevin Youkilis home for Boston's only run. Far from a dominating performance by Tallet however as in his 7 innings of work despite 9 strikeouts he also walked 6 batters. Now how many one-hitters (technically it is a one-hitter) will you see with 7 men left on base? Jesse Carlson takes the final two innings for the Jays, strikes out four and preserves the non-shutout one-hitter.

The recent Sox troubles, losers of three of their last five, drops them 3 1/2 games out of first place for the first time since mid-April.

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 1 at
Rogers Centre.

Brian Tallet(4-4) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was
stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and 6 walks in 7 innings. Tallet
whiffed an impressive total of 9 Boston batters reducing his ERA from 3.61 to
3.37. Toronto rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Jesse Carlson got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Brad Penny(5-3).
He surrendered 3 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.

May 29, 2009 Nationals 7, Phillies 4

Back and forth in the early going. Two Phillie comebacks, the final one giving them the 4-3 lead, go for naught when the Nats tie the game in the 5th. Everything falls apart for the Phillies in the top of the 9th when the Nationals score 3 times and hold on for the win.

A special notation regarding today's baserunning for Pedro Feliz. Not the fastest guy in the world as we know (13 stolen bases in 11 seasons), he gets his first stolen base in over a year and a half by being the back end of a double steal in which Jayson Werth stole third. Feliz also gets a caught stealing for the game when, on a hit and run attempt in the 8th, Carlos Ruiz misses the ball and Feliz is easilly nabbed at second.

Josh Willingham had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park where the
Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 4.

Washington came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring
3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Wil Nieves led off and keyed the rally when he
reached on an error. Cristian Guzman followed, but he was set down on
strikes. Nick Johnson then ripped a base-knock. Ryan Zimmerman was up next
and he lined a base-hit to load the bases. Adam Dunn came to the plate and
was hit by a pitch. Willingham kept things alive and lashed a single. Josh
Bard came to the plate and drew a walk. After another out, Justin Maxwell
struck out, unable to help the rally. Washington had 14 hits for the night
while Philadelphia had 7.

The win was credited to Mike Macdougal(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no
runs. Julian Tavarez was credited with his 2nd save. Chan Ho Park(4-2) took
the loss in relief. His ERA increased from 3.00 to 3.28 as he allowed 3 runs
in 1 and 1/3 innings.

May 29, 2009 Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

The first trip of the year north of the border goes south in the 7th inning. Homeruns for Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz put a 2-0 Jays lead down to a tie after 6 1/2, but a very sloppy bottom of the 7th for the Sox with Toronto getting three walks and two singles off of Daniel Bard and Ramon Ramirez give them two runs and the victory. Former Phillie Rod Barajas proves to be a pain in the ass today on a 3 for 3 day scoring the Jays first run after hitting a double and his single brings home the two runs in the 7th.

And no, that zero atbats for Jays DH Kevin Millar is not a typo, he walked all three times to the plate. Twice of starter Tim Wakefield, and once in the disasterous bottom of the 7th.

Brandon League(4-0) came on to close the door tight in relief. He gave up
just 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 innings and racked up 4 strikeouts. The Boston
offense proved no trouble in the 9th.

Jason Frasor earned his 8th save. Daniel Bard(1-1) absorbed the loss in
relief. He was unable to retire a batter and surrendered 1 hit and 2 walks.

May 28, 2009 Red Sox 11, Twins 2

The Sox salvage a split with the series as the "Homerdome" lives up to its name. J. D. Drew knocks two over the wall, David Ortiz gets his 11th of the yar and Dustin Pedroia joins the homer brigade with one of his own. Both Twins runs score on homeruns during garbage time in the bottom of the 9th, with Jason Kubel going deep to spoil Josh Beckett's shutout bid and Brendan Harris also goes yard off of Manny Declarmen.

Three of the Sox homeruns were off of Twins starter, rookie Anthony Swarzak who has not had the best of luck so far. In Swarzak's first major league start five days ago, he wa shelled by the Brewers to the tune of 7 hits, 7 runs and 2 homeruns in only 1 2/3 innings. Swarzak fares no better today against the Sox allowing 9 hits, 7 runs and 3 homers but does manage to go 5. Overall in his first two starts in the bigs, 6 2/3 innings with 16 hits, 14 runs and 5 homeruns allowed. In checking his stats in baseballreference Swarzak didn't fare any better in 2010 with Rochester in AAA, compiling a 5-12 record with an ERA over 6.00.

J.D. Drew cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Metrodome where the Boston Red
Sox beat the Minnesota Twins by the score of 11 to 2.

Drew had a big day with his bat. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the
1st inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 3rd inning and doubled in the 5th
inning. Boston simply wore out the Minnesota pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.

Josh Beckett(5-4) got the win allowing 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings. Anthony
Swarzak(0-2) was given the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

'The ball was jumping off my bat' Drew said. 'I didn't do anything
differently, it's the same way I always approach the game.'

May 27, 2009 Phillies 8, Marlins 5

After an agonizing 6 game losing streak, losing all 6 games by one run with 3 in extra innings, the Phillies come out flying on all cylinders scoring in each of the first four innings and get back in the win column. Brett Myers helps his own cause with two hits including a double, and scores once and drives in a run. That puts Myers' batting average (now don't forget, he is a pitcher) at an unbelievable .526, 10 hits in 19 atbats. I can't find any batting stats for individual pitcher besides their average, at bats, hits and homeruns in the SOM, if there is anything like that in the game let me know, but I believe it would be Myers' 4th double of the season.

Myers, as we know, won't go the whole season due to injury so will have no chance of possible beating the best hitting season for a pitcher in history. If you are curious, in modern times since the DH rule was adopted in 1973, the top 5 (minimum of 50 plate appearances) are:

.356 for Orel Hershiser in 1993
.354 for Mark Portugal in 1994
.344 for Mike Hampton in 2002
.339 for Micah Owings in 2007
.333 for Don Robinson in 1980 and for Rick Rhoden in 1984

As far as I can find from some research online, the highest average ever for a pitcher in one season was a .433 for Walter Johnson in 1925.

Raul Ibanez cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies beat
the Florida Marlins by a score of 8 to 5.

Brett Myers(6-3) got the win despite looking shaky at times. He gave up 9
hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'.
Philadelphia took care of Florida with no trouble in the 9th.

Myers got relief help from Brad Lidge who gained credit for his 11th save.
Burke Badenhop(3-2) suffered the loss. He was knocked around by
Philadelphia, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.

May 27, 2009 Twins 13, Red Sox 5

Two-run homeruns for David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia help put the Sox out to a quick 5-2 lead after 2 1/2, but Minnesota scores 13 unanswered runs in a romp and the worst loss of the year so far for the Red Sox. Neither starter, Daisuke Matsuzaka or Kevin Slowey, is all that effective. Dice-K allows 7 runs through 3 innings in the loss, and Slowey allows 5 runs in 4 innings. Not going the required 5 denies Slowey of the win, and Jose Mijares picks up the win with 3 innings of one hit ball in relief. The Sox were trying to hold their own down 8-5, until the 7th inning when Joe Mauer smokes one over the wall for a grand slam off of Takashi Saito, part of a 5 run inning, and ices the cake for the Twins.

May 26, 2009 Marlins 4, Phillies 3

For the fifth game in a row, the game is decided by only one run with the Phillies on the short end of the stick. After the Marlins jump out to a quick 2-0 lead, Jimmy Rollins gives the Phillies a run back by hitting a single and getting to home plate with no help from his teammates. How is that possible? Rollin stole second and third, and comes home on a wild pitch by Andrew Miller. Rollins strikes again in the 3rd when he and Shane Victorino go deep for back-to-back homeruns and a 3-2 Phillie lead that looked like it would hold up.

When Ryan Madson smokes through the 8th inning, he stays on for the 9th but after an out allows a double for Cody Ross and a single by Chris Coghlan with Ross stopping at third. Brad Lidge comes on at that point, but pinch-hitter Ronny Paulino rips a single to right. Ross scores easy for the tying run, and Coghlan tries for third while Jayson Werth's throw to third goes wild enabling Coughlan to advance home for the go ahead run. Some strong Marlins defense saves them in the 9th, when Ross makes a shoestring catch of a sure game-tying double for Chris Coste for the final out of the game.

Interesting statistical oddity of the day - Madson gets a hold and Lidge gets his first blown save of the year. You would think by seeing that kind of thing and with the final score that Lidge would get the loss, however Madson gets the loss since both runners on base were his responsibility and charged to him. One of the ways that sometimes won-loss records for relievers can be a bit misleading at times.

WEB GEMS- Bot 9th: Cody Ross robbed Chris Coste of an extra base hit.

In a great finish the Florida Marlins came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the ice-cold Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 3
at Citizen's Bank Park.

Florida erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2
runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Cody Ross began the rally when he
doubled. Chris Coghlan stepped into the batter's box and he smacked a
single. Ronny Paulino then delivered a base-hit, and an error was also
committed. Florida rapped out 7 hits for the night.

The victory went to Cristhian Martinez*(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Leo Nunez recorded his 10th save. Ryan Madson(1-1) was charged with
the loss in relief.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Martinez*, 'was if we had
played it at home.'

May 26, 2009 Red Sox 4, Twins 3 (13)

After getting shut out last game, the Sox storm out of the gate with 3 first inning runs knocking Twins starter Nick Blackburn from the game, but could have had more as they left the bases loaded. That almost game back to haunt them, as little did I know at the time they would not score again for 12 more innings! The play account follows the game in the blog, too much to fully explain, so highlights follow.

The Twins do peck back against Jon Lester, tying the game in the 4th inning. It stays tied at 3 for the next 8 innings until the Sox score in the top of the 13th via a Jacoby Ellsbury single, stolen base, and Dustin Pedroia's single knocks Ellsbury home. Almost didn't get to extra innings though as the web gems tell you, as Jason Bay robbed Delmon Young of a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 9th.

Both teams wasted chances on the bases today with 30 LOB total in the game (17 for Boston) and the Sox grounded out into inning ending doubleplays in the 10th and 11th innings. The Twins loaded the bses off of Jonathan Papelbon with no outs in the bottom of the 11th, and come up scoreless after Paps bears down.

It got so crazy that the Twins used three shortstops in the game, two of which don't even have shortstop on their cards. Brain Buscher, who has never played shortstop, came in on defense after shortstop Nick Punto was pinch-run for in the 9th, and Buscher moves to his more usual third base after Joe Crede pinch-hit for third baseman (starting the game at shortstop) Brendan Harris in the 10th. Crede took over at short, only playing the position once in his 10 year career. Crede did make an error that was not involved in the scoring.

Overall, one of the more interesting games I have had and with the best result too, a road extra inning win. Always good to get those.

May 25, 2009 Marlins 3, Phillies 2

Back home after a 10 game road trip, and another one run loss for the Phillies for their 5th straight loss and lose first place in the division to the Marlins in the process. They get a chance in the 9th when Ryan Howard homers to narrow the gap to a run and get twp runners on base, but Chris Coste grounds out to end the game.

Short homestand though, as after this past 10 game trip they are at home for three gamers with the Marlins and Nationals and back on the road again for another 10 game road trip out west. Between May 15th and June 7th, only 6 of the 26 games will be at home. Guess the schedule makers decided to be unkind for a three week stretch.

May 25, 2009 Twins 5, Red Sox 0

The Red Sox begin a 10 game road trip in the Twin Cities to face the AL Central leading, but one game below .500, Minnesota Twins but come up empty as three Twins hurlers hold the Sox scoreless to end the streak. Not for lack of trying as Twins starter Francisco Liriano barely goes the required 5 innings walking 8 and the Sox loaded the bases with no outs twice, but can't poke anybody across home plate. Doomed from the beginning as Jason Kubel and Mike Cuddyer rippped back-to-back homeruns in the first inning for 3 runs out of the gate off of Brad Penny.

And who is the hottest team in baseball now that the Sox have had their winning streak ended? Believe it or not, the sad sack Pittsburgh Pirates who have won 8 straight games - and still sit 9 games below the .500 mark!!

May 24, 2009 Yankees 7, Phillies 6 (11)

C. C. Sabitha was having his way while the Yankees were having their way with Cole Hamels in the early stages, as the Yanks score 5 off Hamels and Sabitha retires the first 13 Phillies in order. Then, Sabitha unexplicably falls apart after that first out in the 5th as Jayson Werth and John Mayberry Jr.(first major league homerun for Mayberry) take him deep for back-to-back shots. After an out, Eric Bruntlett and Carlos Ruiz hit doubles to bring another run across the plate and Jimmy Rollins goes yard bringing Ruiz home in front of him, ending Sabitha's day and a sudden 5-4 Phillie lead.

The lead doesn't hold, as the Yanks get that 5th run off Hamels in the 5th with a walk and two singles to end his day to retie the game. Werth goes deep again for his second homerun in as many innings in the top of the 6th to give the Phils the lead back, but again it doesn't hold when Derek Jeter hits one over the wall in the 6th off Clay Condrey to tie it up again. The pitchers bear down at that point, and thanks to some sloppy defense the Yanks win in the bottom of the 11th. Jeter hits a double, Johnny Damon puts down a bunt which Ryan Howard grabs - and throws right past first base allowing Jeter to score on the error and a Yankees walk-off win.

All three games of the series were decided by only one run with two walk-off extra inning losses for the Phils in the sweep to end a 10 game road trip.
