May 19, 2009 Phillies 3, Reds 1

After three straight less than stellar starts, Cole Hamels is on his horse today as he holds the Reds scoreless for the first 7 innings until tiring in the 8th when Cincy scores their only run. The Phillie power shines again with solo shots for Ryan Howard (his major league leading 19th) and Jayson Werth (his 11th), along wit ha sac fly for Chase Utley for the other run. Brad Lidge goes a spotless 9th for his 10th save and remains unscored upon so far this season, 13 2/3 innings and counting.

The win ups the Phillie lead in the NL East to two games. On May 1st the Phillies sat at 10-11, 7 games behind the 18-5 Florida Marlins. Since that time, a 12-4 Phillie run combined with a 3-13 Marlins slump - well, you can see what happens.

May 19, 2009 Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 7

Two players account for 7 or the 8 Sox RBI today - Jeff Bailey and Mike Lowell. Bailey so far is making everyone forget about Youk with his bat as he knocks 2 home in the 2nd and a 2-run homerun in the 4th, giving the Red Sox a healthy 5-1 lead. However, the Jays get to Tim Wakefield in the 6th with a four run inning which ties the score. Two more come home for Toronto in the top of the 8th when Takashi Saito walks three straight, the third knocking a run home. Daniel Bard allows a single to give Toronto the 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, enter Mike Lowell. B. J. Ryan lets two get on base and Lowell gets a hold of one, knocking it over the wall for a 3-run shot as the Sox take their lead back 8-7. Paps takes the 9th, allows a hit and three outs, gets the save and gives Daniel Bard his first major league win.

8 to 7.

Jeff Bailey enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He doubled bringing in two
baserunners in the 2nd inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 4th
inning. Toronto threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

allowing no runs. Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 9th. B.J. Ryan(1-1)

May 17, 2009 Phillies 8, Nationals 3

Raul Ibanez homers for the third straight day (3 out of 4 games) and Carlos Ruiz has a nice 3 for 4 day as the Phils take three of four from the Nationals. Not a bad beginning to a career before today for Nationals rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann as in his five starts before today a 2.84 ERA and more strikeouts than innings pitched, but that ERA shoots up by almost a run with his 7 inning, 6 run effort today. Zimmermann got plenty of early support as Adam Dunn's 3-run homerun in the first inning started Washington off well, but that would be all the scoring they can do as five Phillie pitchers hold them to two hits the rest of the way.

BTW, as I am sure you already know, Jordan is of no relation to Nats third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. Not exactly a common last name, but if you never noticed Jordan's last name has 2 N's at the end while Ryan has just one.

May 17, 2009 Red Sox 6, Mariners 4

Today was a gift win from the heavens. After Russell Branyan's solo shot for the Mariners gave them a 2-0 lead after two, it wasn't looking good until JD Drew took Jason Vargas deep for a 2-run blast in the 6th to tie the score. In the bottom of the 8th after 7 solid innings for Justin Masterson, Ramon Ramirez retires the first two batters and hits Adrian Beltre with a pitch. With lefty Branyan up, I go with the odds and bring in lefty Hideki Okajima. It backfires on me, as Branyan puts his second of the game over the fence for a 4-2 Seattle lead and Okajima looks to ne the goat of the game.

Former Soxer David Aardsma comes in for the top of the 9th for Seattle, and the Sox go to work against their former teammate sending 10 batters to the plate. After Mike Lowell fouls out, JD Drew doubles, pinch-hitter David Ortiz walks and my new sparkplug Jeff Bailey hits a double to left field scoring Drew. Wladimir Balentin throws home trying to get Papi, and it goes way past everyone as Ortiz and Bailey both score for a sudden 5-4 Sox lead. It must have unnerved Aardsma, as after a Varitek foulout he hits Nick Green with a pitch, walks Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia singles to score Green. Jason Bay walks, before Mike Lowell fouls out again for the final out of the inning.

The pitcher who looked to be the goat of an inning ago, Hideki Okajima, ends up getting the win and Paps takes the 9th uneventfully for his 8th save and a series aweep. The line against Aardsma - 1 inning, 3 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks and a hit batter for his 5th blown save of the season.

In a dramatic ending the Boston Red Sox staged a comeback and held on to win
over the Seattle Mariners by the count of 6 to 4.

Boston had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3
hits. Boston ended up with 9 hits for the game while Seattle had 6.

Hideki Okajima(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1/3 of an inning.
Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 8th. The losing pitcher was David
Aardsma(2-3) in relief.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' J.D. Drew said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'

May 16, 2009 Nationals 3, Phillies 1 (game 2)

Game 2 of a doubleheader I though for sure was going to be a slugfest. Drew Carpenter for the Phillies, just called up from the minors, making his first major league start against Nationals suckass Daniel Cabrera. To my surprise, both pitchers pitch fairly well as 10 runners left on base spelled the difference between a win and a loss for the Phillies. Carpenter does his part, 3 runs in 6 innings, but the Phils didn't put up much of a fight against Cabrera who allows the one Phillie run on a Jimmy Rollins bases loaded walk. The Phillies get two on in the top of the 9th, but Rollins pops up to end the game.

May 16, 2009 Red Sox 10, Mariners 3

Seems like the Red Sox don't miss the injured Kevin Youkilis a bit right now with Jeff Bailey around at first base. Bailey rips his second grand slam of the season in the 4th inning, JD Drew smokes a 3-run blast in the 6th, and three sac flies enable the Sox to go double digits on the M's. More than one double digits, as along with obviously 10 RBIs they also walk 10 times against the Seattle wild pitching staff. Josh Beckett, finally blessed with some run support, gets the easy win.

May 16, 2009 Phillies 8, Nationals 3

Raul Ibanez homers for the third straight game, today with a 2-run shot, and Jimmy Rollins gets 3 hits as the Phils beat the Nats with ease. Ryan Howard rips homerun number 18 to continue his MVP style season so far (.311, 18 HR, 35 RBI), and Brett Myers hepls his own cause with his 3rd double for the season and a sizzling .500 batting average (8 for 16).

More importantly, the win combined with a Marlins loss gives the Phillies the division lead for the first time this season. Florida, at one time the hottest team in the league at 18-5 at the beginning of the month, has stumbled along recently at 3-11 while over the same stretch the Phils have gone 10-3 to make up 7 1/2 games in the standings.

In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Phillies ripped the Washington Nationals
by a 8 to 3 count.

Philadelphia went ahead for good in the 2nd inning scoring a single run.
Philadelphia had 14 hits for the afternoon while Washington had 7.

Brett Myers(5-3) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings. Scott
Olsen(1-4) was given the loss. He gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.

Philadelphia continued their winnings ways improving their record to 20-14.
They are 8-2 in their last ten games. Jim Riggleman was pretty down after
the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in
the last week or two. That won't get it done.'

May 15, 2009 Phillies 6, Nationals 2

Raul Ibanez is really making his hits count in recent days. His one hit in yesterday's game was good for a grand slam, and his one hit today goes one out of the park for a 3-run shot off of the still winless 0-6 John Lannan. That right there was enough to send the Nationals to their 3rd straight loss, and losers of six of their last seven for a major league worst 9-25 record. Seventh win in nine games for the Phillies, who sit 1/2 game behind Florida in the division despite one less loss than the Marlins. The Marlins are 21-15 compared to the Phillies 19-14, so even with the one less loss being two wins short gives them the 1/2 game defecit.

The Nationals scored their two runs on a 2-run homer for Adam Dunn, his team-leading 8th for the year. Ryan Howard also ripped one out for the Phillies for his major league leading 17th homerun.

May 15, 2009 Red Sox 5, Mariners 0

The Red Sox continue their West Coast swing with a stop in Seattle, and the Mariners are no contest. Three homeruns account for the scoring, with a solo shot for Mike Lowell in the 1st inning, a 3-run blast for Jason Bay in the 4th and Julio Lugo knocks his first of the season over the fence in the 7th. Jon Lester is stingy on the mound in getting his 5th win of the year, going 8 allowing only 3 hits and whiffing 10. Normally Lester would have stayed in for the shutout with a nice low pitch count of 74 after the 8 innings, but since he pitched complete games his previous two starts rookie Daniel Bard takes the 9th inning.

Lester has been absolutely dominating in his last four starts. He has won three of them with a tough luck loss in the other, and over the course of 34 innings has allowed only 3 runs for a miniscule ERA of 0.79 over the four starts along with 38 strikeouts.

May 14, 2009 Cardinals 11, Pirates 10 (11)

I thought this one deserved a special mention. The only team on a par with the horrid 9-24 Washington Nationals are the 10-24 Pittsburgh Pirates, and this game shows why. An 8-1 Pirate lead through 5 innings is wasted away when the Cardinals come back with 3 runs in the 6th, three more in the 7th and a run in the top of the 9th to tie the game up 8-8. St. Louis gets two runs in the top of the 10th, but somehow Pittsburgh comes back with two of their own in the bottom of the 10th to retie the game back up 10-all. A Cardinal run in the top of the 11 goes unanswered by Pittsburgh, and the Cards get the win even with having to use the majority of their pitching staff with 9 pitchers taking the hill for St. Louis.

Albert Pujols rocketed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals
topped the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings by a score of 11 to 10 at PNC
Park.

The score was tied at 8 after nine. St. Louis came out on top in the 11th
inning. Shane Robinson doubled. Donnie Veal then had one get away for a
wild pitch. Pujols then slapped a single. Veal then let one slip out of his
hand for a wild pitch. After an out was recorded, Yadier Molina came to the
plate and drew a walk. After another out, Tyler Greene came up and he drew a
walk to load the bases. Joe Thurston was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out. Both teams finished the game with 16 hits.

Jason Motte(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings.
Veal(0-3) was hit with the loss in relief. St. Louis now has a record of
21-14. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Pittsburgh is 2-8 of late
and now has an overall record of 10-24, worst in the division.

May 14, 2009 Dodgers 8, Phillies 5

Unlike his previous two starts when he pitches shitty but got a win anyway, Cole Hamels has no such luck today when the Dodgers knock him around to the tune of 5 runs in 3 innings. An 8-0 Dodger lead was chopped in half on one pitch when Raul Ibanez knocked one over the fence for a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th for the lone Phillie highlight kncoking Chad Billingsly from the game. Billingsly, with the win, goes to 6-0 for the season. Phillie reliever Clay Condrey continues to impress with three perfect innings in the losing cause and a miniscule 0.44 ERA for the season, one run in 20 1/3 innings of work.

Billingsly, with his now 6-0 record, is one of three remaining undefeated starters. The others are Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers at 5-0 and Andy Pettitte of the Yankees at 4-0. Also on the list is reliever Jared Burton of the Reds at 4-0 who leads Cincinnati in wins believe it or not.

Chad Billingsley(6-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 5 and 1/3
innings surrendering 5 hits and 1 walk. Billingsley chalked up 6 strikeouts.
Jonathan Broxton was perfect in relief and got the save, his 12th.

The loss was charged to Cole Hamels(2-3). He was not very effective,
surrendering 5 runs in 3 innings.

May 14, 2009 Red Sox 3, Angels 0

Brad Penny, Takashi Saito and Jonathan Papelbon combine on a 4-hit shutout as the Sox break their 8 game slide and avert a series sweep. Plenty of chances with 9 hits and 8 Angel walks and they may have left 12 on base, but the all-important total is in the run collumn. JD Drew's solo shot in the 2nd, and sacrafice flies for Jeff Bailey in the 6th and Dustin Pedroia in the 9th account for the scoring. Had the Sox lost today, they would have dropped to last place alone in the AL East, but the win keeps them in a last-place tie with the Orioles, only 2 1/2 games out of first place.

With the win, Penny goes to 4-1 and ties Jon Lester for the team win lead, and for Paps it is save number 7. Not very many save chances so far for Mr. Automatic.

Brad Penny(4-1) and Ervin Santana(0-1) treated the Los Angeles(AL) fans to a
fine pitching duel at Angels Stadium. The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged
as victors over the Los Angeles(AL) Angels by the score of 3 to 0.

Boston took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner. That
early run support was enough for Penny and Boston. Boston finished with 9
hits while Los Angeles(AL) ended up with 4.

Penny was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 7th save.

May 13, 2009 Phillies 11, Dodgers 6

A very entertaining battle of the lefties, Jamie Moyer vs. former Phillie Randy Wolf. The Dodgers draw first blood on a Casey Blake 3-run homer in the 2nd, but the Phils come right back scoring four in the 3rd capped by Jayson Werth's 10th homer of the year, a 2-run shot. LA ties the game in the 4th with a run, and it remains tied until the Phils tear it open with a 7 run 8th inning as it seems Wolf might have stayed in the game just a bit too long, giving Ryan Madson the win with two perfect innings of relief. The Dodgers do get two back in the 9th off of Jack Trashner, with Chad Durbin coming on with two outs and throws one pitch for an out and earns a very cheap save.

The top three in the order in the form of Shane Victorino, Chase Utley and Werth come up big with 7 hits, 8 RBI and scoring 5 times. Not so helpful is Ryan Howard's 0 for 5 day, the first four via strikeout.

The Philadelphia Phillies had very little trouble at Citizen's Bank Park
downing the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers. The score was 11 to 6.

Ryan Madson(1-0) came through for Charlie Manual with an excellent relief
stint. No one got on base in his perfect 2 innings seeing his ERA drop from
3.86 to 3.38. Philadelphia totaled 13 hits on the night.

Chad Durbin gained credit for his 1st save. Randy Wolf(1-6) took the loss.
He was touched for 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Philadelphia continued their winnings ways improving their record to 18-13.
They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss Los Angeles(NL) now has
a record of 18-17.
