May 6, 2009 Phillies 3. Mets 0

The Mets get almost twice as many hits as the Phillies but Chan Ho Park, Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge hold them scoreless for the combined shutout. The Phils get the only run they need on a 1st inning Ryan Howard RBI groundout, and Chase Utley adds a 2-run homer in the 3rd for good measure as the Phils get back on the winning track and gain a game on the division leading Marlins. Florida has lost 5 straight and with the Phillies recent 6-2 run it has enabled them to gain 3 1/2 games in the standings over the last five days and take over second place. in the division.

May 6, 2009 Indians 16, Red Sox 1

Only two words need be said about today - utter embarassment. No other explanation is needed. On the plus side, Jason Bay's homerun with two out in the bottom of the 9th spoils Carl Pavano's shutout bid. Otherwise, it was all Cleveland.

Center fielder Grady Sizemore had 5 hits and 4 RBI and Carl Pavano mowed down
11 Boston batters as the Cleveland Indians clobbered the outmatched Boston
Red Sox, 16 to 1.

Sizemore enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He laced a single in the 3rd
inning, lashed a one-base hit in the 4th inning, tripled with all three
runners coming home in the 5th inning, slapped a single which scored a run in
the 7th inning and doubled in the 9th inning. Cleveland lit up the
scoreboard in the 5th inning with 5 runs on 3 hits and the 9th inning when
they had 5 runs on 5 hits. Cleveland rapped out 17 hits for the night.

The win went to Pavano(2-2) who allowed 1 run in the game. Justin
Masterson(1-2) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Masterson was lavish in
his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a
long night. Pavano brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was
able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the
entire game!

May 5, 2008 Cardinals 6, Phillies 5

Started off well for the Phillies with a 3-0 lead, but St. Louis comes back to score 6 unanswered runs, 4 off of Brett Myers and 2 off of J. A. Happ before a Ryan Howard 2-run homer in the 8th off of a tiring Adam Wainwright narrows the gap back to a run. That is as close as it gets, as Ryan Franklin takes the 9th and save for a walk to Chase Utley gets through unscathed. Pitcher Brett Myers goes 2 for 2 at the plate in the loss with his second double of the season to continue the surprisingly impressive Phillie pitcher hitting. The .286 average for the pitchers is better than all but two regular players.

The old-time 80s Cardinals show up today late as what ended up being the deciding run was scored in the 7th when Joe Thurston and Albert Pujols pull off a home-second double steal. Not quite those 80s guys like Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee and Vince Coleman that we all remember but still good for two steals on one play. For Thurston, the steal of home is his first steal of the season.

Ryan Ludwick slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 6 to 5.

St. Louis scored 2 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. They would
be enough to earn the win. St. Louis managed 11 hits in their victory.

The victory went to Adam Wainwright(4-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 5 runs.
Wainwright got help from Ryan Franklin who earned his 6th save. Brett
Myers(3-3) was given the loss.

May 5, 2009 Yankees 7, Red Sox 2

A typical Josh Beckett start with the Boston bats held silent until Mike Lowell plants one into the seats to close the Yankee lead to a run. Beckett gets charged with the loss though when the bullpen implodes in the 8th ining giving the Yankees 4 runs and the win. The first two batters were HBP for Hideki Okajima, and both runs cross the plate when Manny Declarmen can't hold them plus allows two of his own. An intentional walk to Derek Jeter to load the bases and hopefully set up an inning-ending doubleplay backfires in my face when Brett Gardner rips a bases-clearing double followed by an RBI triple for Leigh Teixeira's husband (sounds good, so I will go with that too!).

Shane Victorino continues to be mired in a 3 for 24 slump including 1 for his last 16, but he is not needed at all today with Chase Utley knocking in 3 runs with a 2-run homer and an RBI single and Ryan Howard's 12th homerun of the year. The St. Louis pinch-hitters come through big time with a pinch-hit solo homerun in the 7th for Brian Barden and a 2-run PH shot in the bottom of the 9th for Jason Larue off of Chad Durbin, but Brad Lidge comes in and records his 6th save even with putting the tying run on base. 5th win in the last 6 games for the Phillies, but they still sit in 2nd place 4 1/2 back of the 18-8 Marlins in the division.

With the talk that you had with the odd NL West standings, I have kind of the same situation with the Dodgers having the most wins of any team in the division, but sit in fourth place!!

runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Utley who helped quiet the crowd
when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. St. Louis
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The victory went to Joe Blanton(4-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Brad Lidge recorded his 6th save. Kyle Lohse(1-3) was the losing
pitcher. He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of work.

'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Tony LaRussa after the game.
'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'

May 4, 2009 Red Sox 9, Yankees 1

After a very exhausting four game 43 inning series in Tampa, the weary Sox come to the new Yankee stadium for the first time. They find it to their liking, specifically the outfield seats. Yankees starter Phil Hughes allows consecutiv singles to start the top of the 6th in a 1-1 game to Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek, so the Yankees went to their 10 wins in relief man Alfredo Aceves. Nick Green greets him to the game taking one deep for a 3-run homerun to give the Sox the lead, 4-1. But they aren't done yet. Kevin Youkilis goes deep in the 7th, and three straight solo homeruns in the 8th for Pedroia, Papi and Youk again spell the end for Mr. Aceves after five homeruns hit off him. Just for good measure, Jason Bay finds the seats in the 9th off of Jose Veras for six Sox homeruns for the day.

Meanwhile, Jon Lester makes one mistake pitch to Johnny Damon for a homerun but otherwise is masterful with only 3 hits allowed and 9 whiffs as he goes the distance to give the bullpen a much deserved rest for his team leading fourth win of the season.

Kevin Youkilis blasted 2 homeruns and Jon Lester tossed a fine 3 hitter as the
Boston Red Sox defeated the New York (AL) Yankees by the score of 9 to 1 at
Yankee Stadium.

Youkilis enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lined a single in the 3rd
inning, delivered a solo blast in the 7th inning and ripped a solo home run
in the 8th inning. Boston banged out 15 hits on the night.

Lester(4-1) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Phil Hughes(1-1)
was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Boston offense and
allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

May 3, 2009 Rays 10, Red Sox 9 (13)

This has without a doubt one of the more exciting, intense series I have ever played. Again today each teams mounts a 9th inning comeback as we go to extra innings for the third consecutive day. Hunter Jones got his chance today because of no other realistic choice, and coughs it up in the bottom of the 13th. Rather than try to explain all the action, the play account follows the game.

Some notes from the series - The Sox lose three of four with the final three going extra innings, mainly because of the Rays speed. Tampa steals 20 (!!) bases for the four game series, unbelievable the way that they ran on the Sox pitchers, and catchers Varitek and Kottaras. B. J. Upton and Carl Crawford each had 8 steals in the four games and Crawford, with three more steals today, ties a major league for most steals in two consecutive games with 7, the 8th time it has been accomplished. And I have to see these assholes again in five days for a three game series in Fenway!

31,592 fans were treated to a fine game at Tropicana Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Tampa Bay Rays won by the
slimmest of margins, 10 to 9.

The game was deadlocked at 9 after nine full innings. Finally, Tampa Bay
pulled the game out in the 13th inning. Jason Bartlett stroked a base-hit.
Hunter Jones then let loose a wild pitch. Michel Hernandez then laced a
one-base hit resulting in a mighty exciting win for Tampa Bay and the 31,592
home town fans in attendance. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the
lead change 6 times.

The victory went to Joe Nelson(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Jones(0-1) took the loss in relief.

May 2, 2009 Rays 6, Red Sox 5 (11)

For the second day in a row, drama is the name of the game as we go extra innings again. The Red Sox seemed to have a safe 5-3 lead as of 7 1/2 after a David Ortiz 3-run shot in the 7th and a Jason Varitek solo homer in the 8th, but Dioner Navarro hits a 2-run homerun off of Takashi Saito in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game up. Saito end up going three innings into the 11th, and I faced a dilemma when I wanted to change pitchers in the 11th. The only two real choices that were fairly rested in the bullpen who haven't pitched a lot the past few days were Javier Lopes and Hunter Jones - two suckasses. Had to pick one, so I went with Javier. Two walks, a groundout and a single later the Rays take home the win. The other run for the Sox scored in a weird way - Jason Bay swung at strike three which flew right by the catcher, so Bay reached first base on the strikeout (it was recorded as a wild pitch). He stole second, went to 3rd on a groundout and scored on a single for Nick Green.

It wa also the kind of game I expected with Tim Wakefield getting the start against those speedy Rays as Tampa steals 7 bases off him, 4 for Carl Crawford. Crawford and B. J. Upton both steal second and third bases consecutively, while Jacoby Ellsbury does the same for the Red Sox. Overall, 10 steals in the game.

What is a weird quirk is this: in real life, the game that will be played next on the schedule (May 3rd) is a game in which Crawford stole 6 bases and tied the major league record for stolen bases in one game set by Otis Nixon in 1991 and tied by Eric Young in 1996. Hope that don't happen in SOM, or Crawford will have 10 steals in only two games!!

31,225 fans were treated to a fine game at Tropicana Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Tampa Bay Rays won by the
slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Tampa Bay won it in
the 11th inning. Dioner Navarro drew a walk. Navarro was safe on a stolen
base. B.J. Upton then drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Evan Longoria
came up and he laced a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for Tampa
Bay and the 31,225 home town fans in attendance. Tampa Bay had 11 hits for
the afternoon.

The win went to J.P. Howell(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The
losing pitcher was Javier Lopez(0-1) in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit
in 1/3 of an inning.

May 2, 2009 Phillies 12, Mets 5

Really nothing noteworthy about the game itself, but I do have a couple of interesting facts for the day: Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard hit back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the 6th inning, and for Howard that was his team-leading 11th homer of the season. That 11 also tied the Mets entire team output for the season. That tie was broken when Carlos Delgado smoked a 3-run homerun off of a tiring Jamie Moyer in the 7th for the Mets.

Those 11 homers for Howard is 2nd in the NL (and the majors), trailing old friend Manny Ramirez of the Dodgers who has 13. Manny also leads the NL (and majors) in RBI with 34 but nowhere near the top in batting average at .299. If you are curious, the AL leader in homers is Matt Young with 11 and the RBI leader is Aubrey Huff with 30. Papi runs second with 22.

The Philadelphia Phillies easily topped the New York (NL) Mets; the final
score was 12 to 5.

Jamie Moyer(2-2) pitched well enough to earn the win. He was reached for 8
hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3 innings. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the game
and New York (NL) had 8.

Oliver Perez(1-3) was the loser. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs
in 4 and 2/3 innings.

May 1, 2009 Mets 9, Phillies 6

A wild game in the first six innings with 7 walks for Phillie starter Chan Ho Park giving the Mets the early lead and they get to Jack Trashner for 3 more, but that is all forgotten when Chase Utley goes deep in the 7th and Jayson Werth plays hero by going yard with two out in the bottom of the 9th off of Francisco Rodriguez to tie the game up.

Now I wasn't expecting much from the powerless Mets in the longball department (they only had 8 all season in 21 games) and no one who played for them last year hit more than 12 homeruns for the entire season, but J. A. Happ feels their brunt as the Mets up their homerun total by almost 50% when Luis Castillo, David Murphy and Carlos Beltran all take Happ into the seats for three straight homeruns. Six pitches, three into the outfield seats off of Happ in the 10th inning. I was disgusted. Werth tries to play hero again in the Phillie 10th with a double, but that is all they would manage in the extra frame off of J. J. Putz and Bobby Parnell in a dramatic comeback wasted loss.

At Citizen's Bank Park the New York (NL) Mets outscored the Philadelphia
Phillies in 11 innings 9 to 6.

The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. New York (NL) was
victorious in the 11th inning. Luis Castillo got things going when he lofted
a solo-blast 'downtown'. Daniel Murphy stepped up next and he lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown'. Carlos Beltran then hit a bases-empty home run. New
York (NL) rapped out 11 hits for the night.

J.J. Putz(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Bobby
Parnell recorded his 1st save. J.A. Happ(1-2) was hit with the loss in
relief. He served up 3 homeruns in his HappI.

May 1, 2009 Red Sox 9, Rays 8 (10)

There really ain't much else you can say about a game that features a 9th inning comeback for each team, 30 hits, 19 runs, a grand slam, 11 walks and 5 stolen bases than crazy as hell. Started off well when the Sox erased a quick 1-0 Rays lead with a homer for Youk and a bases loaded knock over the wall for the grand slam for Mr. Papi for a 5-1 lead, but once the Rays put theose speedy legs to work that is when all hell broke loose. It begins in the bottom of the 7th inning, Manny Declarmen has just come in relief for Justin Masterson with a 5-2 Red Sox lead.

Jason Bartlett gets on with a bunt single and steals second. B. J. Upton singles to score Bartlett, and steals second and third. Wanting to get someone a bit better at holding the runners, Hideki Okajima takes over. Carl Crawford singles to score Upton, and after an out and another single Ramon Ramirez takes over on the mound and is greeted by Willy Aybar who knocks both runners home to give the Rays the 6-5 lead. Aybar was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double ending the inning. In the bottom of the 8th after a walk and a groundout putting the runner to second, Bartlett strikes again with a roller to Ramirez who throws over first for the error enabling the runner to score. Upton singles to score Bartlett, steals second, and I bring in Papelbon to stop the bleeding. Paps picks Upton off of second base and gets the final out of the inning on the next batter. Now 8-5 Rays lead.

It takes the Rays 3 pitchers to get through the top of the 9th when no one can nail down the save as the Red Sox get two walks, a wild pitch, a sac fly and 4 consecutive singles as they score 4 times and take the lead back 9-8. Paps stays in the game for the bottom of the 9th, now in linefor a win, and first batter Evan Longoria takes him deep for a homer and the first run scored off of Paps this season in to tie the score back up 9-9 for the second 9th inning comeback of the inning. The Sox get it going in the top of the 10th when Kevin Youkilis is hit by a pitch and scores on JD Drew's triple to re-re-give the Sox their lead 9-8. Not wanting to leave Paps in for another inning, former Dodger closer Takashi Saito takes the 10th and retires the Rays in order for the save. Paps gets credit for the hard-fought Sox win.

Here is the first 9th inning comeback, the Red Sox 9th:

15,353 fans watched an exciting game at Tropicana Field. The Boston Red Sox
topped the Tampa Bay Rays by the slimmest of margins, 10 to 9.

The score was tied at 9 after nine. Boston won the hard fought contest in the
10th inning. After two were out Kevin Youkilis was hit by a pitch. J.D.
Drew stepped up next and he tripled. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw
the lead change 5 times.

The victory was credited to Jonathan Papelbon(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Takashi Saito gained credit for his 1st save. Lance
Cormier(0-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 5 hits and no walks.
