April 19, 2009 Phillies 9, Padres 4

After being shutout for 19 consecutive innings, the Phillies unload in the 2nd with a solo homerun for Ryan Howard and a 3-run shot for pitcher Chan Ho Park. Interestingly enough, the homerun for Park was on pitcher Josh Greer's card, but Park is an N for homeruns since he hit a homer during the real season so gets the dinger and the win. The Phillie pitchers have been rather impressive with the bat so far overall at .333 (7 for 21) with one homer and 5 RBI and only 4 strikeouts. Not bad for pitchers.

A rather crazy end of the game between the Phillies 8th and Padres 9th with 6 walks, two hit batters, two singles and 4 runs combined. Brad Lidge gets a cheap save retiring one batter when he come into the game with the bases loaded and two out in the 9th but meets the save requirements because the tying run was on deck.

The Philadelphia Phillies had an easy time of it at Citizen's Bank Park
defeating the San Diego Padres by a score of 9 to 4.

Philadelphia tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 3
base hits. The key at-bat was by Chan Ho Park who came through for the home
fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'. Philadelphia had 10 hits overall,
while San Diego had 7.

Park(1-1) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Park got help from Brad
Lidge who was credited with his 3rd save. Josh Geer(0-1) was tagged with the
loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 6 innings.

April 19, 2008 Red Sox 6, Orioles 2

Nice to have a Red Sox team with some speed in all aspects of the game. Dustin Pedroia steals 2 bases (one a straight steal, and one on a swing and miss hit and run attempt), and new fireballer Jon Lester strikes out 9 for an easy Red Sox win. Not many save chances so far this year, so on a hunch Paps comes into the game with two out in the 8th and a runner on base with a 3 run lead. A Sox run in the bottom of the 8th would have negated the save opportunity for the 9th, but Paps get his 2nd save anyhow. Nick Green gets a nice 3 for 4 day from the #9 spot knocking in two and scoring once.

scoring was all that Jon Lester(2-1) needed. Jonathan Papelbon relieved and
was untouched by Baltimore as he recorded the save, his 2nd.

Koji Uehara(1-1) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving
up 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.

April 18, 2009 Padres 8, Phillies 0

The offense is totally offensive again today, being shutout for the second straight day this time by Shawn Hill who tosses a two-hitter. His mound counterpart, Brett Myers, sucks the joint out as the Pads get 7 of their runs in the first 3 innings of the game off of Myers. On the positive side, the Phillies bullpen holds up well allowing four hits and one run over the final 6 innings with JA Happ (James Anthony, if you are curious) going four with that one Padre run against him.

Shawn Hill whitewashed Philadelphia on 2 hits and Kevin Kouzmanoff smacked 2
homeruns and scored 3 times at Citizen's Bank Park where the San Diego Padres
beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 8 to 0.

Kouzmanoff enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' in the 2nd inning, slapped a single in the 3rd inning and ripped a
solo home run in the 5th inning. San Diego had 10 hits for the night.

Hill(1-1) was credited with the shutout. The loss was charged to Brett
Myers(2-1). He was unable to control the San Diego offense and allowed 6
hits and 3 walks in 3 innings.

April 18, 2009 Orioles 2, Red Sox 1

Josh Beckett strikes out 11 Orioles allowing four hits, and only gets a big "L" to show for it. One of those hits was a homerun for Nick Markakis in the first inning to give the O's a 1-0 lead. The Sox tie it in the bottom of the 5th when JD Drew singles (the first Sox hit of the game off of Orioles starter Adam Eaton), steals second and is knocked home by Jason Bay's single to tie the game at 1. After Cesar Izuris singles with one out in the 8th, Ramon Ramirez relieves Beckett and Brian Roberts greets him into the game with a searing double which scores Izturis from first with the deciding run. The BoSox go down quietly 1-2-3 in the 9th against George Sherrill and drop to 4-7 for the year.

Baltimore scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. After an out was
recorded, Izturis lashed a single. Brian Roberts came next and he doubled.
Adam Jones dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Baltimore had

Beckett(1-2) was the losing pitcher. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 11
batters in 7 and 1/3 innings.

The Phils travel back home after a short road trip and I think the final score speaks for itself, nothing more to say about the embarassment of today. No wait, one more thing to say - this is Cole Hamels' second start of the year and the Phillies have scored one run for him in the two starts combined for the 0.50 run support to account for Hamels' 2.13 ERA and 0-2 record.

Chris Young allowed only 2 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard
for Philadelphia as the San Diego Padres crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 13
to 0.

Kevin Kouzmanoff had a big day against Philadelphia. He doubled bringing in a
run in the 4th inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in
the 6th inning and doubled scoring a run in the 9th inning. San Diego
totaled 15 hits on the night.

For Young(2-0) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Cole Hamels(0-2) ended up
with the loss. He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and no
walks.

'Young just dominated us' losing pitcher Hamels said. 'Hopefully we can get
to him the next time around'

Brad Penny is taken off the hook for the loss when the Sox explode for a 5-run 6th inning and put the game away with 4 more runs in the 8th to snap a three game slide. JD Drew knocks in four runs and Kevin Youkilis goes 4 for 4 with four singles. Two pitchers who happened to be in the right place at the right time are rewarded today, as Takashi Saito ends up with the win as the pitcher of record when the Sox took the lead in the 6th and Manny Declarmen gets a surprise save. When he game into the game in the 8th the Sox led by one run 6-5, and with the 4 run 8th doing away with the save opportunity for Paps, Declarmen stays in the game and picks up the save himself. Aubrey Huff gets a nice 3 for 4 day with two homeruns in the losing cause for the Orioles.

April 16, 2009 Phillies 4, Nationals 1

Don't let the final score fool you - this was a classic pitchers duel until the Nats bullpen got involved. That Nats scored in the 1st inning when Anderson Hernandez singled with a Chase Utley error putting him on second base, goes to third on a groundout and scores on Ryan Zimmerman's sac fly. Meanwhile, Shairon Martis is pitching the best game of his young career holding the Phillies hitless until Ryan Howard rips a solo homerun with one out in the 7th. That beaks up the no-no chance, but more importantly ties the game.

Martis wouldn't allow his second hit of the game until the 9th inning, when after Shane Victorino singles and steals second Utley makes up for his error in the 1st inning by knocking Victorino home with a single to give the Phils the 2-1 lead. In came the relievers, and Martis ends up getting sacked with 3 runs allowed on only 2 hits. Joe Blanton on the Phils side gets his first win of the year with 8 solid innings allowing no earned runs, and Brad Lidge goes an uneventful 9th for the save.

perfect ninth, his 2nd save.

April 15, 2009 Yankees 21, Rays 3

Yes it isn't a Sox or Phillies game or a no-hitter but I figured this one deserved a mention in the blog. The Yankees rip into 6 Tampa pitchers to the tune of 21 runs, 5 homers and a shellacking that the Rays won't forget anythime soon. Andy Pettitte just lays back, lets his teammates do all the dirty work and pitches a complete game to add insult to injury. It would be better if the score was the other way around and the Yanks got trashed, but oh well.

April 15, 2009 Athletics 3, Red Sox 0

The bats are held quiet once again as the Red Sox get shut out for the second time this young season. Brett Anderson silences the Sox today allowing 3 hits in 8 innings along with 11 strikeouts. The Red Sox do try to mount a rally in the 9th when Andrew Bailey walks Youk, JD Drew and Jason Bay but Mike Lowell can't deliver in the clutch and grounds into a game-ending double play. A's rookie Landon Powell, in only his second game in the majors, gets his bat out in full force going 3 for 3 with his first big league homerun in the 3rd inning along with an RBI single in the 7th as he knocks in 2 of the 3 Oakland runs.

Jason Bay, this being his first full season with the team, can't seem to get on track yet through the first nine games. 0 for 3 today with 3 whiffs, along with an .088 average for the year (3 for 34) so far with 13 K in those 34 at bats. Other Sox struggling in the season's early stages adding to the teams 3-6 start include JD Drew (.161) and Kevin Youkilis (.167).

Brett Anderson dominated striking out 11 Boston batters as the Oakland
Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox 3 to 0 at McAfee
Coliseum.

Anderson(1-0) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks
in 8 innings lowering his ERA to 1.29. Oakland had 8 hits for the game and
Boston had 3.

Andrew Bailey earned the save, his 4th. The loss was charged to Tim
Wakefield(0-2). He surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Anderson offered, 'The
fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout

April 14, 2009 Athletics 7, Red Sox 4 (13)

Too many wasted chances (14 LOB) is the downfall today in the Red Sox's first extra inning game of the season. Started off well with a 3-0 Sox lead after 3 1/2, but the A's come back to tie it off of Dice-K. The Sox regain the lead in the top of the 7th, only to see Takashi Saito cough off a solo homerun to Orlando Cabrera to put the game back into a deadlock, 4-4. Both bullpens bear down at that point, with Manny Declarmen and Jonathan Papelbon holding the A's to one hit for 5 1/3 innings and the Oakland relievers holding the Sox scoreless for the final 6 2/3 innings of the game.

The Sox had their chances in the extra frames, loading the bases with one out in the 11th and getting the first two runners on in the 13th only to come up empty each time. Justin Masterson comes in relief after Paps held the A's to one hit over 3 innings, and blows the game. Ryan Sweeney walks, and a forceout puts him to second. Speedster Rajai Davis comes in to pinch-run for Sweeney and steals third. Jason Giambi is intentionally walked hoping for an inning-ending double play grounder, but it never comes as after Matt Holiday strikes out for the second out Jack Cust smokes his second homerun of the game for a 3-run walk-off homerun and an A's win.

Coliseum where the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox in 13 innings by
the score of 7 to 4.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Oakland won the game in the 13th inning.
Ryan Sweeney started the inning off right when he drew a walk. After an out
was recorded, Davis proceeded to steal third base. Jason Giambi then was
walked intentionally. Matt Holliday followed, but he was set down on
strikes. Cust stepped into the box and smacked a three-run homer making
Oakland victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Both teams
totaled 11 hits on the night.

Andrew Bailey(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. Justin Masterson(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched

April 13, 2009 Athletics 4, Red Sox 3

Brad Ziegler of the A's gets one of the easiest saves you will ever see. He only throws one pitch, the batter doesn't even hit the ball and the game ends. How is that possible? More on that in a few.

Most of the game was all Jon Lester. He dominated Oakland through the first 6 innings as a David Ortiz 2-run single gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead, striking out 10 only allowing two hits. He fell apart in the A's 7th inning allowing a single, flyout, an a 2-run homerun for Jack Cust which ties the game. Another single and a double end Lester's day, but Ramon Ramirez can't hold the runners allowing both to score via a sac fly and an RBI single for the 4-2 Oakland lead.

A Youk sac fly in the 8th narrows the gap to 4-3, and in the Sox 9th with A's starter Dallas Braden still pitching Rocco Baldelli singles with two outs. That brings in Ziegler to the mound and also Jacoby Ellsbury to pinch-run for Baldelli. Wasting no time Ellsbury breaks for second for a steal, but a 20 split card makes him a dead duck at second base, ending the game and giving Ziegler the easiest save he will ever get.

Bobby Crosby had 2 base hits as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Boston Red
Sox 4 to 3 at McAfee Coliseum.

Dallas Braden(1-0) pitched well for Oakland in their victory. He was reached
for 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 1.80 to
1.32. Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Brad Ziegler recorded his 1st save. Jon Lester(1-1) suffered the loss. He
struck out 10 batters in 6 and 1/3 innings despite losing the game.

April 13, 2009 Phillies 13, Nationals 3

Oh, do I pity you. I see what you mean about Daniel Cabrera, the suckass that he is. The Phillies tee off on Cabrera to the tune of four homeruns in the first 3 innings with a solo blast for Raul Ibanez in the 2nd, along with 3 homeruns in 4 batters in the 3rd inning on back-to-back shots for Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino along with a bomber for Ryan Howard. Cabrera somehow manages to pitch into the 5th for 6 runs allowed in 4 1/3 including the 4 homeruns along with hitting two batters and throwing a wild pitch.

Not done yet, the Phils go off on a slew of Nationals relievers for 7 more runs making a total of 5 homeruns (Howard has two), 5 doubles and 13 runs. Meanwhile, Jamie Moyer is smoking right along holding the Nats scoreless until tiring in the 8th and allowing a run. The Nats get a couple of runs in the garbage time 9th off of Jack Traschner after a bunch of defensive substitutions for the Phils, but way too little too late.

Oddly enough Jayson Werth, the man who had been red hot so far and came into the game with a .520 average, was held hitless in three official atbats and sees his average drop 65 points. The rest of the team takes up the slack very nicely.

WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Raul Ibanez robbed Elijah Dukes of a Homerun!

First baseman Ryan Howard smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Washington
Nationals were badly beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies, 13 to 3.

Howard had a great day at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in
the 3rd inning, doubled which plated a run in the 5th inning and blasted a
two-run home run in the 7th inning. Philadelphia ended up with 14 hits for
the game while Washington had 9.

The win was credited to Jamie Moyer(1-1) who went 7 innings allowing 1 run.
Daniel Cabrera(0-2) was given the loss. He served up 4 homeruns in his 4 and
1/3 innings.

'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Howard said. 'Whenever I
would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

April 12, 2009 Rockies 4, Phillies 0

A scoreles duel between Aaron Cook for the Rockies and Chan Ho Park (making his Phillie debut) goes sour in the 5th inning when Park just falls apart allowing three walks, a double and two singles in the inning accounting for all four Rockies runs in the game. J. A. Happ does his job with three innings of hitles relief, but Cook proves to be too much as he goes the distance with a four-hit shutout.

The Marlins won again today to remain undefeated at 6-0, but the Phillies will not be the first team to lose to the Nationals (they play each other next on the schedule) as a win today for the Nats gave the Atlanta Braves that distinction.

Aaron Cook had a strong outing at Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies beat the
Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 4 to 0.

Cook(1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Philadelphia offense. He
surrendered only 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from
3.60 to 1.29. Colorado and Philadelphia each finished the afternoon with 4
hits.

Chan Ho Park(0-1) took the loss. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances
today,' Charlie Manual said. 'Cook just was too much for our guys.'
